WHAT IS PATTERN DRAFTING?
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Pattern drafting is the process of creating a master pattern from scratch — using body measurements, geometric principles, and technical knowledge to draw the flat template from which a garment will be cut and constructed.

It is the bridge between a design idea and a finished garment. Without a properly drafted pattern, even the most beautiful design will not fit the body it was made for.

STEP 1 — TAKE ACCURATE MEASUREMENTS
Body measurements are the foundation. Bust, waist, hip, shoulder width, sleeve length — every number matters. One inaccurate measurement produces a garment that cannot be corrected at fitting.

STEP 2 — ESTABLISH YOUR BLOCK
A block (also called a sloper) is the basic pattern template for a specific style — bodice, trouser, sleeve, skirt. It is built directly from the measurements. Every design variation grows from this block. ✂️

STEP 3 — DRAFT THE PATTERN
Using the block, you extend lines, add design details — darts, seams, pleats, style lines — and develop the specific shape of the garment you want to create. This is where construction knowledge meets creativity.

STEP 4 — ADD SEAM ALLOWANCES
The drafted pattern pieces need seam allowances added before cutting fabric — the extra width that allows the garment to be sewn together without shrinking the finished size.

STEP 5 — CUT, TRACE, AND TEST
A test garment (called a toile or muslin) is cut and sewn first — before touching the real fabric. This allows you to identify and correct fitting issues before they cost you expensive material.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
WHY IT MATTERS
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
A designer who cannot draft a pattern is dependent on someone else's template forever. They cannot create original silhouettes. They cannot adjust for different body types. They cannot produce garments that truly fit.

A designer who can draft a pattern can create anything. From a basic T-shirt to a complex evening gown — every garment begins on paper with a pencil and a ruler. 🌍

**📐 SEE WHAT OUR ONLINE CLASS STUDENT SUBMITTED — AND SHE DID THIS FROM HER LOCATION.**

This right here is a graded Back Skirt pattern — multiple sizes, clean lines, precise dart placement, seam allowance noted and accounted for. This is not the work of someone who attended a physical class. This is the work of someone who showed up online, paid attention, and applied every single thing she was taught. 👏✂️

Grading class with her was smooth, engaged, and clear — because when a student is serious, location becomes irrelevant. The internet closes every distance. The only thing that cannot be taught online is the decision to start. 🌍

This is what OSC's online fashion programme looks like in practice. Not theory. Not videos you watch and forget. Real skill. Real submission. Real feedback. Real progress — from wherever you are.

If She can do this from her location — so can you.

Lagos. Ibadan. Abuja. London. Houston. Accra. It does not matter where you are. What matters is that you start. 📲

💬 THE BIGGEST MISTAKES FASHION BUSINESS OWNERS MAKE IN THEIR FIRST 3 YEARS.

MISTAKE 1 — PRICING BY FEELING, NOT BY FORMULA.
You charge what feels fair, or what you think the client will pay. You have no costing framework. You finish a job and realise you covered the materials but barely covered your time. The business is busy but not profitable. This is not a talent problem. It is a pricing system problem.

MISTAKE 2 — TAKING EVERY CLIENT.
No qualification process. No clarity on your ideal customer. You say yes to everything because you need the money — and you end up with clients who drain your energy, miss deadlines, and argue about invoices. The clients who would pay your real rates never find you because your positioning says nothing specific to them.

MISTAKE 3 — BUILDING ON WHATSAPP INSTEAD OF SYSTEMS.
Your entire business runs through your phone. Measurements in voice notes. Deadlines in your head. Deposits collected informally. One lost phone or one miscommunication and your entire operation is exposed. 💼

MISTAKE 4 — GROWING WITHOUT A FINANCIAL STRUCTURE.
Revenue comes in and goes out. You cannot tell if the business made money last month without going through your phone transactions one by one. There is no separation between the business account and personal spending. Growth feels impossible because you cannot see the numbers clearly.

MISTAKE 5 — DEPENDING ON REFERRALS FOR EVERY CLIENT.
When the referrals slow down — and they always slow down eventually — you have no other channel. No brand presence. No strategy. No pipeline. The business stops when the word-of-mouth stops.

MISTAKE 6 — DOING EVERYTHING YOURSELF FOREVER.
Designing, sewing, fitting, accounting, marketing, client communication, deliveries — all you, all the time. You cannot take a holiday. You cannot take a sick day. Because the business does not run without you physically present at every stage.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Every one of these mistakes has a solution. And every solution is taught inside the OSC Fashion Business Course.

📊 WHAT SEPARATES A FASHION BUSINESS THAT SURVIVES 5 YEARS FROM ONE THAT CLOSES IN 12 MONTHS.

It is not talent. It is not luck. It is not even capital. 👇

The Nigerian fashion industry loses talented designers every single year — not because they could not design, not because their clients did not love their work, but because the business behind the talent was never built to last.

Here is the honest difference between the businesses that survive and the ones that do not.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
THE ONES THAT CLOSE — recognise yourself?
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
→ Price based on what they think clients will pay
→ Take every job regardless of margin or fit
→ Track money through phone transactions and memory
→ Depend entirely on referrals for new business
→ Cannot scale because they do everything themselves
→ React to problems as they arrive — no systems, no plan

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
THE ONES THAT SURVIVE AND SCALE
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
→ Price using a costing formula that protects their margin every time
→ Know their ideal client and attract them deliberately
→ Separate business finances from personal finances from Day 1
→ Build brand presence that generates enquiries beyond word of mouth
→ Create systems that allow production to happen without them managing every detail
→ Plan for growth — quarterly, annually, with numbers

The difference between these two businesses is not years of experience. It is knowledge. Structured, applied, business knowledge — the kind that is rarely taught in fashion schools. 💼

Until now.

The OSC Fashion Business Course — in partnership with GIZ, SMEDAN, ICSS,and GOPA — was built specifically to give fashion business owners in Nigeria the knowledge that keeps businesses alive, growing, and sustainable for the long term. 🌍

💼 DAY 1 IS DONE — AND THE ROOM SAID EVERYTHING.
We will be honest. Before a single session begins, you can tell within the first hour whether a group of people came to learn or came to transform. Today's cohort came to transform. 👀✂️
Day 1 of the OSC Fashion Business Course is officially underway — and the energy in that room this morning was the kind that does not need a caption to explain it. Entrepreneurs, designers, brand founders, and fashion business owners — all in one space, all with the same question on their minds:
How do I build a fashion business that actually works?
That question is exactly what this course was built to answer. Not in theory. Not in vague motivational language. But in structured, practical, actionable sessions backed by the collective expertise of OSC Entrepreneurship Institute and international partners including GIZ, SMEDAN, ICSS, Kaduna Business School, and GOPA. 🌍
This is not a classroom. This is a business development room. And Day 1 has only scratched the surface of what is coming between now and July 7th.
To every participant in today's session — you showed up. That is already the hardest part. Everything from here is building. 💛
To everyone watching from the outside — the door is not fully closed yet. DM us now and find out if there is still a place for you in this cohort.

🔍 BEHIND EVERY GREAT GARMENT IS A WORKSPACE BUILT FOR PRECISION.
This is what ours looks like. 👇

Every serious profession has a serious workspace. Surgeons have operating theatres. Architects have drafting studios. And fashion designers — real ones, trained to international standard — have this. ✂️

Welcome inside OSC College of Fashion, Lagos.

The drafting studio where every garment begins — tables wide enough to spread a full pattern, rulers, set squares, pencils, and the kind of space that demands precision before a single pair of scissors moves.

The cutting floor where fabric meets intention — grain lines aligned, pattern pieces pinned, and every cut made with the knowledge of what that single movement will produce in the finished garment.

The sewing studio where construction becomes real — industrial machines, professional irons, dress forms at every station, and students who have been trained not just to operate equipment but to understand exactly what it is doing to the fabric at every stage.

And the garment factory — one of the largest operational garment factories in Lagos — running at 5,000 pieces daily, where students do not just learn about production. They learn inside production. 🏭

This workspace is not decoration. It is the environment that produces 10,000+ graduates who can work anywhere in the world.

If you are serious about fashion design — you deserve to learn in a space that is serious about you. 🌍

🏆 15 YEARS. 10,000+ GRADUATES. ONE STANDARD. INTERNATIONAL.

This is OSC College of Fashion. 👇

Since 2009, we have been doing one thing — building fashion professionals who can compete anywhere in the world. Not just in Lagos. Not just in Nigeria. Anywhere. 🌍

In 15 years, we have trained over 10,000 designers, pattern makers, garment factory operators, fashion entrepreneurs, production managers, and brand founders. Some of them are running their own labels in Lagos. Some are managing factories. Some are teaching. Some are exporting. Some are in London, Houston, Accra, and Johannesburg — building fashion careers that started right here on our studio floor.

What has never changed in 15 years is the standard.

International pattern drafting. Professional garment construction. Fabric technology. Production management. Tech pack development. Garment costing. Fashion business — the full professional curriculum, delivered to the same standard it was on Day 1. The same standard used in fashion schools in London, Paris, and New York.

But here. In Lagos. For Nigeria. For Africa. For every creative on this continent who deserves world-class training without leaving home. ✂️

We are not the newest fashion school. We are the most proven one.

OSC College of Fashion is open for enrollment now — Lagos, Ibadan, and fully online for students across Nigeria, Africa, and the diaspora.

🏷️ TAG THE PERSON IN YOUR LIFE WHO HAS ALWAYS WANTED TO LEARN FASHION DESIGN — BUT NEVER STARTED.

You know exactly who it is. 👇

The one who sketches outfits in the margins of their notebook. The one who looks at every outfit and says "I could make that." The one who has been saying "I want to learn fashion" for the last two years but has not taken the first step yet.

Tag them right here. Right now.

Because OSC College of Fashion — Nigeria's most awarded fashion school — is open. Courses available in Lagos, Ibadan, and fully online for anyone across Nigeria, Africa, and the diaspora. 🌍✂️

From complete beginners to experienced sewers ready to upgrade — there is a programme for where they are right now. And there has never been a better time to start.

The only thing between them and the skill they have been dreaming about is one tag. One DM. One decision.

Be the person who changes the direction of someone's life today. 💛

✂️ WATCH HOW A SKIRT IS BORN.
This is not a finished product reveal. This is the process — and the process is where the real education lives. 👀🧵
What you are watching is one of our students curating a skirt from the ground up. Measurements taken. Pattern drafted. Fabric selected, pinned, and cut with the kind of precision that only comes from proper training. Every seam placed with intention. Every dart manipulated to shape the fabric to the body it was made for.
This is what fashion design looks like when it is being done correctly. Not rushed. Not guessed. Built — stitch by stitch, decision by decision, from a blank piece of paper to a finished garment that fits. ✂️
At OSC College of Fashion, this is not the end of the programme. This is what students are doing in the middle of it. By graduation, the skill level you see here has already doubled.
If you are in Lagos, Ibadan, or anywhere across Nigeria and Africa and you want to be able to do exactly what you just watched — the door is open. 🌍
