TRIBUTE TO THE DESERVING
As we wind down towards the 40th anniversary of FGCL Ijanikin, we must be bold enough to celebrate each other in the light of positivity. As a result, I intend to pen down brief tributes to heroes in their own rights. Heroes that were practical and positive influencers during school days.
No doubt each of us had our peer divisions. We were closer to some more than the others. I therefore encourage you all to cast your healthy minds back in time in other to appreciate and recognize those that positively impacted on you during your journey through Ijanikin.

I met this guy in Form one. He was also in my class. Good looking, handsome and well behaved, I was taken aback by his warm and courteous disposition. The friendship blossomed when I eventually lost my Dad in that same form 1. As young as he was being my classmate, this guy helped me to shoulder the huge burden of losing my dad. What my family couldn't achieve in consoling me, this guy achieved. He hung out with me when I was so lost and devastated. He talked to me, advised me and succeeded in turning my dad's loss into a positive challenge for me.
He wanted me to show what my dad really meant to me by bracing up and proving it to him academically. In time, instead of the mortal pain of a resounding loss, I was lifted up by an eventual challenge of proving how much I loved my Dad by staying focussed on the reason I was sent to school in the first place.
I was just too close to my Dad. His loss was clearly an end to any desire of life in me. How this guy was able to navigate me through the greatest challenge I have ever faced till date in my life remains a miracle to me. At a point when many left me stranded, this jewel gave me his time, words and compassion. I was later to learn that he had equally lost his mum not too long before I lost my dad (I think). It was later made very clear to me how much he loved his mum because later on, as we got to know one another better, he had nothing but exclusively love for his mum.
This guy didn't end up just comforting, consoling and navigating me through my path of despair, he took it upon himself to teach me how to spend sleepless nights reading. He would call me up and we will go to the reading rooms across the hostels in Satellite town where we would 'swot' into the night.
Never known to give up on finding out solutions to problems, especially science and mathematical ones, he taught me how to endure practice, using many formulae. He just won't quit until he gets an answer to a question.
Matured and with sound mind, he served as a moral rallying point for quite a number of us. I remember that the late Ayuba Akut was equally as close to him as I was. He taught us so many 'latest' songs and how to rap.
Despite his modest background, this guy was everybody's guy. He fitted in all social cadre. He was usually all smiles, ever warm. Could take all jokes and could equally give out on point measures of jokes.
This guy was and still is a good man, deserving of honor from me and those who knew and know him. I may not have seen him for about 30 years now but his impact on my life extends much more than that.
If you don't already know the person I'm talking about, please join me in appreciating Mr Tunde Mabayoje who is deserving of all and much more of the tributes listed above.
Tunde known exclusively as 'Mabs' in school, thank you so much for everything you've done. May God Almighty who sees all your decency and effort reward you beyond all imaginations.
You are deserving of this Tribute.
