Founded in 1962, the University of Lagos has, for over 5 decades, provided qualitative and research-oriented education to Nigerians and all those who have entered its domain in search of knowledge. At its inception, the University of Lagos was empowered to produce a professional workforce that would steer the political, social and economic development of a newly independent country. Over the last fifty years the University has pursued this mission with vigour, excellence and panache. On a beautiful sunny public holiday, Tuesday, August 25, 2026, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) marked a significant milestone in scientific advancement with the commissioning of the Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Learning Hub at the Faculty of Life Sciences.

The facility, located at S001 in the Science Complex, was generously donated by Prof. Bola Oboh, immediate past Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics and Research), who left office on March 28, 2026.

The Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Learning Hub represents a strategic investment in the future of scientific research at the University of Lagos.

The facility provides a dedicated computational environment for the cleaning, assembly, analysis, and interpretation of sequencing data, equipping researchers and students with tools needed to engage with the rapidly expanding volume and complexity of biological data.

More than a physical space, the Hub is envisioned as an ecosystem for innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, skills development, and research excellence. By connecting biological sciences with computational methods, it has the potential to generate new insights, support advances in human health, strengthen agricultural research, and position the University of Lagos at the forefront of next-generation life-science research.

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has once again proven its excellence, securing the 2nd spot in Nigeria and an impressive 23rd in Africa in the July 2026 Second Edition Webometrics Ranking of World Universities. Globally, UNILAG stands tall at 1,291st place - a testament to its growing digital footprint and academic influence.

The Webometrics Ranking, published biannually by the Cybermetrics Lab of the Spanish National Research Council, evaluates universities based on their digital presence, research visibility, open scholarly repositories, and overall academic impact.

⚫ Grant Details:

Award: Up to $30,000 USD per project

Duration: 12 months (starting Feb 1, 2027)

Scale: approximately 8 grants available

⚫ Who Should Apply?

Teams led by Principal Investigators from at least two Afretec member universities

69 leaders. One bold vision. A milestone worth celebrating

On Saturday, August 1, 2026, the University of Lagos Business School (ULBS) and the Citadel School of Government (CSG) marked a significant milestone as 69 participants graduated from the flagship Advanced Diploma in Public Leadership and Statecraft programme.

But this was more than a graduation ceremony.

It was a celebration of leadership, learning and the preparation of a new generation of public-sector thinkers and changemakers—strengthening the shared commitment of ULBS and CSG to advancing executive education and building capacity for effective leadership.

From the classroom to the corridors of public service, the journey towards better leadership continues.
