Students Won’t Write 2020 WAEC – Adamu, Education Minister
July 8, 2020

Final year secondary school students in Nigeria won’t participate in the forthcoming West African Examination Council(WAEC) examinations, the Federal Government has declared.

The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, who disclosed this to State House Correspondents on Wednesday after the week’s virtual Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, also said there is no date for school resumption yet.

He said he would prefer Nigerian students to lose an academic year than to expose them to dangers.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Governor of Lagos, has announced August 3 for resumption of schools in the state.

Announcing the date at a media briefing on Friday, Sanwo-Olu said the resumption is for those in SSS 3 and Tech III.

According to the governor, the decision was taken after a meeting with stakeholders in the education sector.

“We just finished a very long meeting with various stakeholders in the education sector. That is what has kept us for the past two hours. And so, for the avoidance of doubt, students impacted by this directive would be in the transitional class of JSS 3, SSS 3 and Tech III, the technical schools three, as well,” he said.

“The commencement date for this would be from Monday, August 3, 2020. SSS 3 and Tech III will start. But for JSS 3, we’ll wait for another one or two weeks and we’ll see how we’ve taken the first set of Tech 3 and SSS 3 before they now subsequently would open.

“This permitted opening would apply only to day schooling; no boarding activity of any sort is permitted at this time.

“School authorities are expected to spend this period, between now and August 3, to prepare themselves well and get the right directives from our ministry of education and the quality assurance office under the ministry of education.”

For students in tertiary institutions, the Governor said “they’ll continue to enjoy their online academic activities”, until the state takes a decision on physical resumption.

“I know that some of them are also conversing with us on if some final year students would be allowed to have physical opening. That modality, we’re still working on it with them, but the online teaching that has started at the tertiary institutions will continue,” he added.

Schools in Lagos have been closed since March 2020 in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria.

– All restrictions applying to mass gatherings will remain in force (no more than 20 persons permitted, and this includes funerals as well)

– Opening times for government and private offices, markets, supermarkets, eateries and so on, will remain as approved.

– Places of worship will remain CLOSED in Lagos State, until further notice.

– All Social and Events Centers, and Social Clubs, will also remain closed, for now.

– All bars, day and night clubs, cinemas, games arcades, beaches and beach fronts, gyms and spas continue to remain CLOSED

– Eateries and restaurants are to continue to open as normal for takeout only. In-dining is still Prohibited.

– Mask usage is mandatory in public places. Offices to refuse entry of any persons not wearing masks, in line with the Presidential Task Force directive on “No mask, no entry. No mask, no service.” Enforcement agencies will from this week charge defaulters to court.

Breaking: Schools Will Reopen Soon But No Date Yet – Minister Of State For Education

Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, has disclosed that there are plans to soon reopen schools nationwide, however, it won’t happen in two weeks as being speculated in some quarters.,
Nwajiuba, made the clarification on Thursday during the daily briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, following rumours making the round the Federal Government would reopen schools in the next two weeks.

Nwajiuba said there is no exact date yet for schools to resume, adding that schools will be reopened after they are ”resourced properly”. He said,

“We all are seriously interested in reopening and I believe we will reopen soon. But I can’t confirm what your children said that we will reopen in two weeks.

The issue around reopening has nothing to do with the availability of the schools or not.

It has to do with national governance. The idea of shutting down the schools has nothing to do with the schools per se.

You heard the chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, the SGF, keep saying it is a national response. It is a single national response and everything we do flows from that.

When they determine, I’m sure you have seen all the experts here, that there is the measure of safety to which we can expose our children, we will gladly do that. We are watching and we are working with all bodies within and outside the country.

The five countries of West African Examination Council (WAEC) are meeting and I just came out of a meeting with African Union (AU) Ministers of Education, everybody is concerned as you are. We hope to reopen very soon.

This morning, I met with the Ministry of Science and Technology. We are looking at putting a system in place that can disinfect every child as he goes into a school and disinfect him as he goes out.

If we resource our schools properly we can begin to reopen. But we must be able to ensure that the children go in safe and come out safe and not become a conduit for further infection in society.”
