Today, July 28th 2024 is World Hepatitis Day.

Hepatitis is a viral infection which can cause liver disease, cirrhosis and liver cancer.

There are 5 main strains of the hepatitis virus – A, B, C, D, and E. Together, hepatitis B and C are the most common infections and result in 1.3 million deaths and 2.2 million new infections per year according to WHO.

Statistics shows that every 30 seconds, someone dies from Hepatitis-related illness, according to WHO.

One of the benefits of regular voluntary blood donation is being tested for Hepatitis FREE!!!

On the 1st of May, 2024, Action on Blood, a Lagos-based voluntary blood donor organisation, in partnership with Global Blood Fund (GBF), a US-based blood charity, launched My Blood Story Creative Content Competition. The aim of the competition was for people to share their stories of how voluntary blood donation saves or improves lives using social-media friendly short content.

The prizes were $500 for 1st prize, $300 for 2nd prize, and $200 for 3rd prize. There was also the possibility of wining $100 as a special commendation prize.

We had over 150 enquiries and almost 60 submissions! Entries came from both women and men and from people of all ages. 56% of entrants were female vs 44% male and the age range was from 7 years to 59 years. We received many different types of contents including written stories with illustrations and photos; spoken poems put to music and images; straight-to-camera talks; dances, presentations and animated videos.

When it came time to selecting the winners, the judges were VERY pleased with the number, the variety and the quality of entries that we received for this competition. With so many brilliant entries and moving stories behind many of them, it was a really difficult competition to judge.

But there had to be winners!!!
