*CAUSES OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE*
Parental negligence, carelessne
Most Nigerian parents want their children to ‘face their books’ and get good results.
But shouting ‘Go and read your book!’ or threatening ‘You must pass that exam o!’ is not a study strategy.
Our children don't need pressure without strategy.
They need guidance, structure, and support.
Good study habits don’t just happen by magic. They are built over time, and parents play a crucial role.
1. Create a study-friendly environment
A child trying to read in the middle of kitchen noise or while cartoons are playing is set up to fail.
Make a dedicated space for study, even if it’s a small table in a quiet corner. Let the child associate that space with focus and discipline.
2. Set a daily routine
Just like we plan mealtimes, plan study times. For example, after lunch and rest, let there be 45 minutes for study.
No distractions, no phone, no unnecessary errands.
Children thrive with consistency.
3. Teach time management
Help your child break big tasks into small ones.
For example: ‘Read 3 pages of your Basic Science book before dinner’ is better than ‘Read your book.’
Be specific. Teach them to use timers or to-do lists (even handwritten ones).
4. Show interest, not pressure
Instead of asking, ‘Have you finished studying?’ try ‘What topic did you cover today?’
Engage them in conversations. Ask questions. Let them teach you what they’ve learned.
It builds confidence and memory.
5. Praise effort, not just results
If a child reads daily but scores 65%, celebrate the effort and ask what can be done to bring improvement.
A child who feels safe to grow will develop persistence.
6. Be the example
Children copy what they see.
If they never see you reading, planning, or being organized, your words won’t stick.
Let them catch you reading a book, writing notes, or planning your day, hey will mirror it.
7. Reduce comparison
Saying, ‘Look at Endurance who scored 90%’ kills motivation.
Focus on your child’s journey. Encourage progress, no matter how s

WHY MANY SECONDARY SCHOOL GRADUATES STRUGGLE IN THE UNIVERSITY
My friend, Ade, was the top student in our secondary school. He excelled in all subjects and was always the teachers' favorite. Everyone believed he would have an easy time in university. However, Ade’s journey took a different turn. Despite his academic brilliance, Ade lacked certain character traits and life skills that are essential for university success.
When Ade started university, he found it difficult to manage his time effectively. Without the structured environment of secondary school, he often missed deadlines and struggled to keep up with his coursework. His inability to manage stress led to frequent bouts of anxiety, affecting his performance.
Furthermore, Ade’s poor financial management resulted in him constantly being short on money, which added to his stress. The freedom of university life also exposed him to negative influences, and he found it hard to resist peer pressure, leading to poor decisions that affected his academic standing. Ultimately, Ade’s promising start was overshadowed by these challenges, highlighting the importance of character and life skills in addition to academic excellence.
Ade’s story is not unique. Many secondary school graduates face similar struggles in university. Here are five reasons why this happens:
1. Lack of Time Management Skills: In secondary school, students often have a structured timetable. University life requires students to manage their own time, balancing classes, assignments, and personal activities, which can be overwhelming without proper skills.
2. Inadequate Stress Management: The pressures of university life can lead to significant stress. Without effective stress management techniques, students may experience anxiety and burnout, impacting their academic performance.
3. Poor Financial Literacy: Many students are not prepared to handle financial independence. Mismanagement of funds can lead to financial stress, affecting their abil
