DO YOU ONLY READ TO YOUR CHILD?

Child development experts advise parents to start reading to their children as early as from the foetal stage.

According to them,this helps in brain development, instills a love for books in the child, improves his vocabulary, helps him become a better listener,creates a bond between parents and child,, amongst other benefits.

However, reading to a child does not equate teaching the child to read.

Reading requires skills in decoding written texts, it does not come natural as erroneously assumed by some.

This skill is learned through organized, explicit and engaging reading instruction which involves phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, blending, segmenting,fluency, making meaning of what is being read, etc.

Anyone who is literate enough can read to a child,, but it requires deliberate planning to teach a child to read.

So if everytime you hold a book, you are only reading to the child without efforts at empowering him to be able to decode the texts, he might struggle with reading .

A reading child is a happy child!

So as I work with schools, parents, individuals and children on reading, I get asked why some children struggle with reading and spelling while others seem to be early starters.

Well, there are many factors responsible for this. However, some elements might have been omitted during the early or foundational stage.

Various research and studies from experts on reading show that when some elements are missing during the foundation stage, a child will struggle with decoding written texts.

For the next seven days, I will be sharing some likely factors responsible for this and possible solutions.
