Do your kids recognise words but cannot break them into sounds?

Some children become good at recognising familiar words when reading but struggle to identify each sound when spelling.

What to do: Practise segmenting. Say a simple word such as ship and help your child stretch it: /sh/ – /i/ – /p/. Then ask them to write the letters that represent each sound.
