Changes to ABRSM Candidate ID Policy

Candidates taking certain exams must show photo ID before their exam so that we can identify them. This includes Practical and Performance Grades 6 to 8, Jazz Practical Grade 5, Music Theory Grades 1 to 8 and diplomas.

We’ve recently made some changes to our Candidate ID Policy

These affect:

who can use the ABRSM Candidate ID Form available on our website

showing ID to the camera in a digital Performance Grade or diploma video

what happens if a candidate does not show ID or it’s not clear

What photo ID can candidates use?

Candidates aged 16 and over – must use a passport, national ID card, college or university ID card, rail or transport card, or UK driving licence.

Candidates under 16 – who do not have any of the ID listed above can use the Candidate ID Form available on our website.

ID for digital Performance Grades and diplomas
For Performance Grades 6, 7 and 8 and digital diplomas, candidates must show their photo ID at the start of their video. We must be able to see the ID clearly.

At the start of the recording, hold the photo ID up close to the camera for at least 10 seconds.

It's important that the camera focuses on the ID document and that the ID photo is clear.

The candidate must then show their face to the camera for 10 seconds.

Problems with ID may delay results

If a candidate does not show ID or it’s not clear, an examiner will mark the exam but we will not release the result.

We will email the person who booked the exam asking them to securely share the candidate’s ID with us.

Once we’ve received and checked the ID, we’ll release the result.
