REGURGITATION: THE EATING DISORDER.

The act of bringing back up food substances from the stomach to the mouth, re-chewing and re-swallowing without vomiting it. It is a common issue in individuals with disabilities, particularly those with neurological or gastro-intestinal conditions.

A small amounts of food are regurgitated from the stomach, usually 20 to 30 minutes after eating. The material often passes all the way to the mouth where a person may chew it again and reswallow it.

In humans, regurgitation can be a normal process in infants, where it is commonly known as spitting up.

However, in adults, regurgitation is involuntary and can be a symptom of an underlying medical condition, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition in which the ring of muscle that separates the esophagus and stomach does not function properly, allowing stomach acid and food to flow back up into the esophagus.

Surprisingly, this behavior is commonly seen in some animal species, such as ruminants like cows and sheep, which have a four-chambered stomach and regurgitate their food as part of their digestive process.

In addition to its physical manifestations, regurgitation can also have psychological and social implications. Individuals who experience regurgitation may feel embarrassed, ashamed, or anxious about eating in public or social situations.

Conclusively, regurgitation can be a symptom of an underlying medical condition or a behavior associated with eating disorders in adults.

MYTH: Learning disabilities are only academic in nature. They do not affect other areas of a a person’s life.

REALITY: Learning disabilities are life disabilities. The the same disabilities that interfere with reading, writing, and arithmetic also will interfere with sports and other activities, family life, and getting along with friends.”

Some children have good verbal (language) skills but weaknesses in visual and spatial perception, motor skills and, most significantly, social skills affecting their ability to grasp the main idea, “see the whole picture,” or understand cause and effect relationships.

Many children with LD struggle with organization, attention, and memory. One-third of them may also have an attention deficit disorder, difficulty in regulating attention effectively, paying attention as needed, and shifting attention to another task, when required. Children with LD are creative and resourceful, and can frequently be characterized as gifted and as alternative thinkers.

They are often very smart, and typically have strengths and talents that differ from the skills emphasized in school. With recognition of their difficulties, appropriate help, and the development of their interests and talents, children with LD can learn to succeed both in school and beyond.
