Bible Reading: 2cor.: 12:1-31

“For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.” Whatever God permits to come our way, He provides us grace to bear. His grace is always sufficient for our challenges and His strength shines brightest in the midst of our weaknesses. Therefore, whatever situation you find yourself, realize that you have what it takes to triumph over it through the grace of God. All you need to do is ask God for the abundant supply of that grace. But on the other hand we must not make the mistake of welcoming every problem and difficulty that shows up in our lives as though they are sent by God. God does not sent His children problems and difficulties. He is a good and loving God and doesn’t enjoy watching His children suffer so as to “teach them something.” God’s preferred way of teaching us anything is through His word. It is when we become disobedient and self-willed that He disciplines us as a good father does. Most of the problems that come are way are caused by the Devil and/or the wickedness of this sinful world and that is why we must learn how to stand on the word of God to overcome them - rather than accepting them as God’s will for our lives. For the avoidance of doubt, God never sends His people sicknesses, diseases, poverty, failure, frustrations, disappointment, divorce, bareness, perennial singlehood and such like. Jesus Christ our Lord died to take these maladies away from us – so why would God put them back on His people? They are not from God and should be resisted and rejected. Sometimes believers are quick to claim that their problem is a thorn in the flesh sent to them by God. Why would God send you a thorn in the flesh? Do you qualify for it? Have you (like the apostle Paul) been taken to the third heaven and to see and hear things that are too wonderful for mortal ears? Have you been given extra ordinary abundance of revelations into the mysteries of God and His kingdom? Has God been performing extra-ordinary miracles by your hands such that it becomes necessary for Him to keep you humble by allowing a thorn in your flesh? In all probability, the answer is NO! So don’t allow the enemy to give you bone to chew in the name of a “thorn in the flesh”!

Daily devotion Feb.20 2014. Bible Reading: Amos 8:1-14. “Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me: and behold a basket of summer fruit. And he said, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A basket of summer fruit. Then said the LORD unto me, The end is come upon my people of Israel; I will not again pass by them any more.” As summer fruit was not proper for preserving, (especially in those days) but must be eaten as soon as gathered, so the Lord intimates by this symbol that the kingdom of Israel was now ripe for destruction, and that punishment must descend upon it without delay. If we are doing what is wrong and God’s goodness forbears with us such that He seems to overlook our errors and continues to bless us, we must be careful not to take that goodness for granted. The proper thing to do is to recognize the error of our ways and repent (make a u-turn) as quickly as possible rather than getting hardened-up in what God forbids. If we continue in our errors, there comes a time when our cup is full and God’s judgment becomes inevitable. We are presently in what is called the dispensation of grace where God’s love, mercy, favour, longsuffering and forbearance are in abundant display. What people did in the Old Testament and got killed, many people do far worse than those today and no judgment comes upon them. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, God has revealed His grace to man giving everyone the opportunity to repent and get right with Him. But alas, see how many people have taken that grace as a licence for godless living! So many are living today as if sin is no longer sin and as if anyone can do what they want and get away with it. What a mistake that is! The world is getting riper and riper for God’s judgment. Even among born again Christians today, a lot of worldliness and carnality has crept in and become accepted as if God’s word forbidding such things is no longer true. Let us beware of this error. The fact that God in His grace forbears with our errors does not mean that He has changed His mind on what is right or wrong in His sight. We do well to walk in accordance with the standard of His word

Bible Reading: 1 Thess 2:1-20

“For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.” Here is a very important principle for profiting from the word of God – to receive it not as the word of men but of God. Those who receive the word of God as the word of men don’t go far. Whatever you hear from any preacher, pastor or minister, always check it out with the written word of God (the Bible). Once you can confirm that it is the word of God, embrace it with all your heart and put it to work. But if it is contradicts the word of God, reject it – irrespective of who preached it. It should not be a case of “my pastor said” or “the bishop said” or “the prophet/prophetess said” or “the televangelist said” etc. The question should always be “what does God’s word (the Bible say?” That is what will profit you and stand the test of time.

Bible Read: judg 16: 1-31

“Then went Samson to Gaza, and saw there an harlot, and went in unto her. And it was told the Gazites, saying, Samson is come hither. And they compassed him in, and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all the night, saying, In the morning, when it is day, we shall kill him....... And it came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.” There are so many important lessons for us to learn from the life of Samson. For instance consider this: Samson went to sleep with a pr******te and his anointing was still intact. See how he uprooted the gates of the city and took it away to the top of the hill! That was awesome – wasn’t it? Moreover the enemies that laid wait for him were disappointed – they couldn’t get to him because of the powerful anointing at work in his life. But instead of him to repent and amend his way, he continued with the same lifestyle. The next thing he did was to go after another pr******te named Delilah. Read the account – by the time this chapter concluded, not only had he lost his freedom and his two eyes, he was a dead man. When you as a believer indulge in something sinful and you seem to get away with it, don’t think you are smart and don’t take that for granted. Quickly repent and amend your ways. If you don’t, sooner or later, the enemy will get you. Our enemy is crafty and he is watching, waiting for the opportunity to strike. He knows how to set his traps to catch those who trifle with his stuff – so beware. Let us also not forget that it is not only a question of whether or not God will forget us. When we repent, God always forgives us our sins and errors but if through such sins, we grant the enemy the opportunity to hit at us we may still suffer the consequences in spite of Gods forgiveness. Samson was forgiven when he prayed ĄϞϑ his hair grew back but he still suffered in the hand of his enemies and died an untimely death.

Bible Reading 2Thess 3:1-18

“Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us….. For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.” When some brethren especially in a local church are not behaving properly, others should not pretend as though nothing is wrong. They should be made to realize that their conduct is not acceptable in the church because if such misbehaviour is not addressed, sooner or later it will spread to others within the congregation (and then it will become a bigger problem). Notice that this epistle was not written to the pastor of the church in Thessalonica alone – it was written to the whole congregation. In these days of “social correctness” where it is almost deemed wrong to correct somebody publicly for wrong doing, some pastors find themselves in a difficult situation when it comes to rebuking a church member for wrong doing. So this should not be left in the hands of the pastors alone – let members themselves resist the spread of bad conduct within the church. It takes more than the pastor alone to create a spiritually healthy environment in the church. It should be done in as much love as possible but the message must be clear that a bad conduct is not in the interest of the local church and that those concerned should change for the better and for the good of everyone. After all, love should not only be gentle, it must be truthful too.

Valentine's Day, or St Valentine's Day, is celebrated every year on 14 February.

It's the day when people show their affection for another person or people by sending cards, flowers or chocolates with messages of love.

And traditionally on Valentine's Day in a leap year - every four years - women can propose marriage to their partner!

Who was St Valentine?

The day gets its name from a famous saint, but there are several stories of who he was.

The popular belief about St Valentine is that he was a priest from Rome in the third century AD.

Emperor Claudius II had banned marriage because he thought married men were bad soldiers. Valentine felt this was unfair, so he broke the rules and arranged marriages in secret.

When Claudius found out, Valentine was thrown in jail and sentenced to death.

There, he fell in love with the jailer's daughter and when he was taken to be killed on 14 February he sent her a love letter signed "from your Valentine".

How did Valentine's Day start?

Valentine's Day is a very old tradition, thought to have originated from a Roman festival.

The Romans had a festival called Lupercalia in the middle of February, officially the start of their springtime.

It's thought that as part of the celebrations, boys drew names of girls from a box. They'd be boyfriend and girlfriend during the festival and sometimes they'd get married.

Later on, the church wanted to turn this festival into a Christian celebration and decided to use it to remember St Valentine too.

Gradually, St Valentine's name started to be used by people to express their feelings to those they loved.
