Workplace Tips Without Sugarcoating, 7 Unwritten Rules I Learned Late

1. THE BOSS WHO CAN NEVER BE WRONG
Feedback is disrespect.
Questions are insubordination.
Accountability is something they expect from everyone else.

2. THE BOUNDARY-CROSSER
Everything is an emergency.
Your time, privacy and personal life are treated as company property.

3. THE BULLY
They use fear, humiliation or threats to get compliance.
People don't perform because they are empowered. They perform because they're scared.

4. THE ABSENT BOSS
No direction. No communication. No support.
Then somehow, you're still responsible when things go wrong.

5. THE MICROMANAGER
They hired you because they needed your expertise…
then proceed to supervise every breath you take. 😩

6. THE CREDIT-STEALER
Your ideas become their ideas.
Your hard work becomes their achievement.

7. THE “WE’RE FAMILY” BOSS 🚩
Translation:
“Please give more than you're being paid for… because we're family.” 😂

Before you send that "I quit" email in a moment of frustration... read this first. 👇

Working in a toxic environment can make even the most composed professional want to walk away immediately. And sometimes, leaving is the healthiest decision.

But don't let frustration make the decision for you.
Protecting your wellbeing also means protecting your future.
Before you resign, here are three things I encourage every professional to do:

1. Document facts, not feelings. Keep a private record of significant incidents, dates, conversations, and relevant emails where appropriate. If you ever need to explain your experience, clear documentation is far more valuable than relying on memory.

2. Stay professional... even when others aren't. Avoid venting through company communication channels or reacting emotionally in the workplace. Respond thoughtfully, maintain your professionalism, and don't give anyone a reason to shift the focus from the real issue to your reaction.

3. Plan your exit before you announce it. Update your CV. Strengthen your network. Start exploring opportunities. If leaving is the right decision, you'll do so from a position of preparation rather than desperation.

Remember this:
Your goal isn't simply to leave a toxic workplace. It's to leave with your reputation, confidence, and wellbeing intact.

Sometimes the strongest response isn't the loudest one. It's making thoughtful decisions that protect both your peace and your future.

The job interview and hiring process can be daunting for everyone involved. 🫣

Recently, a CEO claimed he had 500 vacancies he couldn't fill, blaming a lack of "quality candidates." It made me wonder... What exactly makes the hiring process so broken?

❌ Are expectations on both sides actually realistic?

❌ Do we complicate a simple process just to fit "industry standards" rather than what we actually need?

A poorly planned hiring process wreaks havoc on organizational culture, skyrocketing workplace stress. And that responsibility sits squarely on the shoulders of leadership.

Beyond what the textbooks say, we have to ask: What values and principles guide our operations, and are they actually sustainable?

Stop expectingyour peoole to perform in systems that dont support them. 🛑

You wouldn’t put an exhausted driver in a high-performance car and expect a smooth ride.

So why are we giving exhausted teams more software, more targets, more pressure…
and still expecting productivity?

That’s not a performance issue.
It’s a Human Infrastructure problem.

When your people are overwhelmed, misaligned, or burnt out... no system will save you.

Sustainable performance doesn’t come from pressure.
It comes from designing environments where people can actually function at their best.

It’s a day late… but the message still stands.

Happy Workers’ Day to the people who keep showing up — even when it’s hard, even when it’s messy, even when no one claps for you.

I recently attended an event which reminded me of something I say often:
Work doesn’t just demand output… it demands you.
Your energy.
Your clarity.
Your emotional capacity.

And if we’re not intentional, work will take more than we planned to give.

So today and all through May, it should not just be about celebrating hard work.
Let's celebrate sustainable work.
Work that doesn’t burn you out.
Work that allows you to still be whole at the end of the day.

Because productivity without wellness is just slow burnout in disguise.

Here’s to building systems, cultures, and lives where people don’t have to break to perform.

To whom it may concern...

If anything, the Bon Bread saga should remind every leader of one thing;

Emotional regulation is not optional in leadership. It is foundational.

When emotions are the foundation for decision making, judgment suffers...and brands pay the price.

A leader, especially a CEO should refrain from these things;

1. Using emotions as a foundation for decision making

2. Taking on fights that don't have your name

3. Exposing your brand or business to needless ridicule

4. Silencing/suing customers rather than engaging or holding dialogues with them

5. Not applying discernment when sourcing advice

6. Abusing opportunities to showcase credibility and product/services quality

7. Using emotional tactics to evade responsibility and accountability.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth;

Work culture doesn’t stay hidden. Pressure reveals it.

In the case of Bon Bread, the speed with which the CEO filed a N50m lawsuit and involved the police is very much suspect of a toxic work culture and a leadership that isn't centred.
It is not just about decision-making, but about the underlying leadership approach and organisational culture.

Because in moments of crisis, what shows up isn’t strategy.
It’s culture.

And culture is a direct reflection of leadership.

This situation could have been handled differently; with better outcomes, stronger brand positioning, and preserved customer trust.

But that requires something many organisations overlook...
