The Africa Smart Competition returns in 2026, continuing a journey that began in 2014 with a simple vision: to equip children and young people with the knowledge, critical thinking skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities needed to thrive in a changing world.

Since 2014, OSE BRAIN QUEST FOUNDATION has created opportunities for children and young adults to learn, think, compete and showcase their abilities through our annual Smart Competition.

At OSE BRAIN QUEST FOUNDATION, we are building tomorrow’s strong thinkers, creative minds and innovative leaders in Africa.

CODING QUIZ CHALLENGE — SENIOR

Coding is an increasingly important skill for the future workforce.

Early exposure to coding helps students develop logical thinking, creativity, problem-solving and digital skills, while giving them the opportunity to understand how technology can be created and used to solve problems.

PERIODIC TABLE QUIZ — JUNIOR

The Periodic Table is more than a chart students memorise for examinations.

It provides a foundation for understanding science and its applications in medicine, material science, electronics, agriculture, energy and environmental science.

We want students to understand science and see its connection to the real world.

STEM QUIZ — UPPER PRIMARY

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

STEM helps children develop critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, innovation, logical reasoning, data interpretation, digital literacy and collaboration.

We want children to understand why and how, not simply memorise answers.

WHAT IF WE ARE TEACHING CHILDREN TO GET THE RIGHT ANSWER BUT NOT TO THINK?

Many children can memorise formulas, follow steps and get the correct answer.

But can they explain WHY a method works? Can they think through a new problem when the familiar formula is not available?

That is where intelligent thinking in Mathematics becomes important.

Intelligent thinking is about developing habits and skills that go beyond memorising formulas. It is about genuine mathematical reasoning, critical thinking and problem-solving.

Here are some habits we should help children and young adults develop:

1️⃣ PRIORITISE WHY OVER HOW
Don't only ask, “What is the answer?” Ask, “Why does that work?”

2️⃣ ENCOURAGE THEM TO EXPLAIN THEIR THINKING
Ask them to explain their answers out loud or write their thinking. Explaining helps build real understanding.

3️⃣ DEVELOP THE “NOT YET” MINDSET
Instead of, “I am not good at Mathematics,” encourage: “I don't understand it YET, but I can learn.”

4️⃣ USE MATHEMATICS COMPETITIONS AND CHALLENGES
They can develop logical reasoning, creativity, confidence and the ability to solve unfamiliar problems.

5️⃣ PRACTISE WORD PROBLEMS
Children learn to connect Mathematics with real-life situations and think carefully about what a problem is asking.

6️⃣ DON'T JUST LOOK FOR THE ANSWER—UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM
Sometimes the biggest challenge is not calculation. It is understanding the problem.

Our goal should not be to raise children who only memorise formulas and reproduce answers.

We should raise children who can:

THINK. REASON. QUESTION. EXPLAIN. AND SOLVE PROBLEMS.

Parents and teachers, let's stop celebrating only the correct answer. Let's also ask:

👉 How did you think about it?
👉 Why does your answer make sense?
👉 Can you solve it another way?

Let's intentionally raise mathematical thinkers, not just answer-givers.
