When the preposition "de" is followed by an article "le" ou "les", you have to use a contracted form like in the examples above.

To identify things or to present people in french, use;

C'est + nom singulier / Ce sont +nom pluriel
C'est un fruit / Ce sont des fruits
C'est mon voisin / Ce sont mes voisins

To identify something that is singular or plural, the question is
Qu'est-ce que c'est ?
To present people ( one or many) the question remains
Qui est-ce?
