LASUCOM INDUCTS 46 GRADUATES INTO THE NURSING PROFESSION

The Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) has inducted 46 graduates into the nursing profession, marking another milestone in the University's commitment to producing highly skilled healthcare professionals for Nigeria and beyond.

The induction ceremony for the 7th set of Bachelor of Nursing Science graduates was held on Friday, 31st July 2026, at the College, where the Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola OLATUNJI-BELLO, mni, NPOM, charged the inductees to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, ethics and compassionate service.

Congratulating the graduates on behalf of the Governing Council, Senate, Management, staff and students of the University, the Vice-Chancellor, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Professor Oseni Taiwo AFISI, FSPSP, MCiOD, described the induction as more than a ceremonial rite of passage, noting that it marked their transition into a noble profession dedicated to preserving life, promoting health and alleviating human suffering.

She reminded the newly inducted nurses that nursing demands not only intellectual competence and technical expertise but also empathy, patience, integrity and selfless service.

"The certificate you receive today is not merely an academic qualification," she said. "It is a call to serve, a badge of responsibility and a covenant to uphold the highest standards of professional ethics."

Delivering the guest lecture, the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), Dr ALHASSAN, represented by Mr Umar GAMBO, encouraged the inductees to take advantage of the vast opportunities available within the nursing profession by pursuing advanced professional and academic qualifications.

He urged them to remain lifelong learners, stressing that "the most dangerous course is one who stops asking questions and seeking knowledge," as evolving evidence continues to reshape healthcare practice. He further admonished the graduates to embrace compassion, humility and honesty while demonstrating the courage to stand against professional misconduct and unethical practices.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Provost of LASUCOM, Professor Olufemi IDOWU, congratulated the graduates on the successful completion of their training, describing the induction as the culmination of years of hard work, sacrifice and dedication. He challenged them to justify the enormous investment made in their education through excellence in professional practice and service to humanity.

The ceremony also featured goodwill messages from the Chief Medical Director of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Professor Adetokunbo O. FABAMWO, and the Director of Nursing Services, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr Omowunmi EKONG, both of whom encouraged the inductees to uphold the values and ethics of the nursing profession throughout their careers.

One of the highlights of the ceremony was the presentation of awards to outstanding graduating students. Fatima Olayinka ADEYEMI received the award for the *Best Graduating Student, while Temidayo Samuel LAWAL was recognised as the Best Student in the Registered Nurse Examination.

The induction of the new graduates further underscores Lagos State University's commitment to producing competent, ethical and globally competitive healthcare professionals equipped to meet the evolving needs of society.
