AUTOMATIC VS MANUAL TRANSMISSION WHICH IS BETTER??
It has always been a thing of argument as to which is better between automatic transmission and manual transmission vehicles. In this article I will give a break down in comparison between automatic transmission and manual transmission vehicle so it serves as a guide in making preference but not withstanding other details that may not be included in the article.
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION PROS:
• It is easier to drive
• The transmission shifts quicker and smoother
• It is easier to control in a stop-and-go traffic since you’re nor requires to press the clutch pedal
• It offers better gas mileage
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION CONS:
• It is relatively more expensive than it’s manual counterpart
• The transmission has more moving parts which leads to greater repair costs
• A transmission with too many gears might shift too often
• It’s not as fun to drive- though this is subjective.
MANUAL TRANSMISSION PROS:
• It is usually more engaging for the driver
• Manual vehicles generally requires less maintenance because they have a less complex designs than the automatic vehicles
• The drives has full control over the gears and when to shift
• It is usually less expensive than it’s automatic counterparts
MANUAL TRANSMISSION CONS:
• Driving a manual car can get tiresome especially in heavy traffic this is because it’s more engaging
• The learning curve is steep
• It is not as safe as the automatic because it requires the driver to change the gear often
• Only a limited selection of vehicles offers a manual transmission
• It requires precise control on hills to avoid stalling or rolling backwards
Regardless of this obvious and subjective comparisons it’s still an issue for some people deciding which of the transmission to go for.
I’ll be sharing some known myths which could also serve as a guide but subject to your criticism as follows :
FUEL ECONOMY:
In the past, it has been a traditional belief that vehicles with manual transmission will have a better fuel economy than it’s automatic counterparts. But as recent auto vehicles gained additional gears and relied less on a torque converter, they can sometimes overtake manual in terms of fuel conservation.
DIFFERENCE IN PRICE:
It is also a myth that an automatic car would always cost more than it’s manual counterpart. This is only otherwise in very rare occasions. In most cases you may not be able to get the car you want in a manual transmission. Subjectively, 80% of 2019 model-year vehicles would come with a automatic transmission.
TRANSMISSION IN SPORT CARS:
The answer depends on your definition of "cool sports car." The 797-horsepower Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye is only offered with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Both the highly anticipated 2020 Porsche 911 and the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette debuted without a manual gearbox option. Finally, Ferrari and Lamborghini no longer offer any stick-shift vehicles. Sports cars don't get much cooler than those. Most modern sports cars use a dual-clutch automatic transmission, which features a computer-controlled clutch and offers the best of both worlds: the control of a manual with the ease and speed of an automatic.
DIFFERENCE IN DRIVING SKILL:
Driving skills is concerned about how relatively good you’re able to handle and control the vehicle anytime you’re driving. If you learn how to drive with a manual transmission vehicle you would be able to drive an automatic car without having issues but if you learn how to drive with an automatic transmission vehicle you won’t be able to drive a manual car without having issues.
DRIVING ABROAD:
If you’re hiring a car in Europe, you’re more likely get a manual car, but in the US and Canada it can be difficult to rent a manual because almost everyone drives an automatic car. The cost of hiring a car can also be influenced by the transmission type you choose. In the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, it’s usually cheaper to hire an automatic vehicle because there’s more supply, while in the UK or Europe it’s easier to higher a manual transmission vehicle.
IN CONCLUSION: IS AN AUTOMATIC CAR BETTER THAN A MANUAL CAR??
The important thing is to choose what you feel most comfortable with but, generally speaking, an automatic car might be best suited to someone who does a lot of urban driving. It’s also a good option for people with a disability or limited mobility.
