Learners Objectives
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
1. Define equation.
2. Translate sentences into mathematical statement.
SIMPLE EQUATION
Equation is a mathematical statement that asserts the equality of two expressions i.e two things are equal. For instance,
26 girls + 15 boys = 41 students
The sign (=) connecting the left-hand and the right-hand is known as the equality sign.
Also, 3 + 7 = 5 + 5
Translating sentences into mathematical statement.
Examples:
1. A certain number is added to 7 and the answer is 12. Translate this sentence into mathematical statement.
Solution:
Let y represent the number
Add y to 7; y + 7
Therefore y + 7 = 12
2. Adam thinks of a number, he doubles it and subtracts 7, the answer is 15. Translate this sentence into mathematical statement.
Solution:
Let n represent the number
Two times the number = 2 ร n = 2n
Subtract 7 from it = 2n - 7
The answer is = 2n - 7 = 15
Therefore: 2n - 7 = 15
3. Samuel thinks of a number, he multiplies it by 5 and adds 3. The answer is 38. Translate this sentence into mathematical statement.
Solution:
Let m represent the number
Multiply by 5 = 5 ร m = 5m
Add 3 to get = 5m + 3
The answer is 38 = 5m + 3 = 38
5m + 3 = 38
