The error in this sentence is not about the verb; it is about the correlative conjunction used.

1. Rule of Correlative Conjunctions
Certain conjunctions work only in pairs.

These include:
โ€ขeither โ€ฆ or
โ€ขneither โ€ฆ nor
โ€ขnot only โ€ฆ but also

When you begin a sentence with neither, it must be completed with nor, not or.

Neither โ€ฆ orโŒ
Neither โ€ฆ norโœ…
So, the correct pairing is:

๐—ก๐—˜๐—œ๐—ง๐—›๐—˜๐—ฅ ๐—ง๐—›๐—˜ ๐—ช๐—œ๐—™๐—˜ ๐—ก๐—ข๐—ฅ ๐—ง๐—›๐—˜ ๐—›๐—จ๐—ฆ๐—•๐—”๐—ก๐—— ๐—œ๐—ฆ ๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—”๐——๐—ฌโœ…

2. Subjectโ€“Verb Agreement Rule with Neither โ€ฆ Nor
When neither โ€ฆ nor joins two subjects, the verb agrees with the subject closest to it. This is called the proximity rule.

In this sentence:
Neither the wife nor the husband is ready.โœ…

The nearer subject is husband (singular)

Therefore, the verb must be is, not are

Correct Structure Formula
Neither + Subject A + nor + Subject B + singular verb (if Subject B is singular)

Ten Correct Context Examples
1. Neither the teacher nor the student is available today.

2. Neither the driver nor the passenger was injured in the accident.

3. Neither the manager nor the assistant knows the answer.

4.Neither the boy nor the girl has finished the assignment.

5. Neither the wife nor the husband is ready to compromise.

6. Neither the speaker nor the moderator was informed earlier.

7. Neither the phone nor the charger works properly.

8. Neither the pastor nor the church member is responsible for the delay.

9. Neither the author nor the editor agrees with the final draft.

10.Neither the candidate nor the interviewer was late.

Prepositions are tiny words like in, on, at, and to that show where, when, or how things happen.
But hereโ€™s the secret:

You canโ€™t really learn them alone!
You must learn them in groups, with the words they go together with.

1๏ธโƒฃ Live At vs. Live In
I live at Uyo.โŒ
I live in Uyo.โœ…

โ€ขUse โ€˜atโ€™ for a specific address.
I live at No.3 Ekponne Street.โœ…

ยฐUse โ€˜inโ€™ for a city, state, or country.
โ€ข I live in Lagos, Nigeria.

2๏ธโƒฃ In Midnight vs. At Midnight
It happened in the midnight.โŒ
It happened at midnight.โœ…

โ€ขUse โ€˜at midnightโ€™ for exactly 12:00 a.m.
The baby was born at midnight.
ยฐIf you mean sometime during the night, say:
I heard a sound in the middle of the night.

3๏ธโƒฃ In the Hospital vs. At the Hospital
ยฐIn the hospital = as a patient.
Cordel is in the hospital (sheโ€™s sick).
โ€ขAt the hospital = visiting or working.
Mum is at the hospital (sheโ€™s visiting someone).

Heโ€™s in the hospital visiting his friend.โŒ
Heโ€™s at the hospital visiting his friend.โœ…

4๏ธโƒฃ On the Bed vs. In Bed
He slept on the bed.โŒ
He slept in bed.โœ…
ยฐOn the bed = sitting or lying on top of it.
She sat on the bed to tie her shoes.

โ€ขIn bed = under the covers, resting or sleeping.
I stayed in bed all morning.

5๏ธโƒฃ In Time vs. On Time
The meeting starts at 8:00 a.m, please arrive in time.โŒ
Please arrive on time.โœ…

โ€ขOn time = not late.
The train left on time.
โ€ขIn time = early enough before something starts.
He arrived in time for dinner.

6๏ธโƒฃ In the Island vs. On the Island
I live in the island.โŒ
I live on the island.โœ…

We use โ€˜onโ€™ for islands and coasts.
โ€ข They built a house on the island.

7๏ธโƒฃ On the Bus vs. In the Bus
Iโ€™m in the bus.โŒ
Iโ€™m on the bus.โœ…

โ€ขWe say โ€˜onโ€™ for public transport (bus, train, plane, ship).
ยฐ Sheโ€™s on the bus to school.
ยฐ Heโ€™s on a flight to London.

8๏ธโƒฃ On the Street vs. In the Street
ยฐOn the street = along the road, walking or driving.
ยฐ The kids are playing on the street.
โ€ขIn the street = literally in the middle of the road.
โ€ข The car broke down in the street.

9๏ธโƒฃ Married With vs. Married To
Sheโ€™s married with a doctor.โŒ
Sheโ€™s married to a doctor.โœ…

ยฐWe always say married to (someone).
ยฐ My aunt is married to an engineer.
โ€ข
But if you want to say how many children they have, use โ€˜withโ€™.
โ€ข Sheโ€™s married with two kids.

๐Ÿ”Ÿ Discuss About vs. Discuss
Letโ€™s discuss about the plan.โŒ
Letโ€™s discuss the plan.โœ…

โ€ขโ€˜Discussโ€™ already includes the idea of โ€˜ talking aboutโ€™, so you donโ€™t need to add it.
โ€ข We discussed the project in class.

๐—›๐—ผ๐˜„ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ฒ ๐—จ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ป๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—ก๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ป๐˜€ ๐—–๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ป๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฒ

Some English nouns just donโ€™t like to be counted.

You canโ€™t say ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฒ ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ- โ€œtwo ricesโ€ or โ€œthree advicesโ€ โŒ

But thereโ€™s a smart way to make them countable! โœ…

Letโ€™s learn how ๐Ÿ‘‡
1๏ธโƒฃ Use Partitives (Units or Measures)
We can quantify uncountable nouns by using a unit of measurement or container.
Examples:
A grain of rice (not a rice)
A piece of furniture (not a furniture)
A cup of tea
A slice of bread
A drop of water

Rule:
When you use a โ€œpartitive,โ€ youโ€™re referring to one unit or portion of the uncountable item.

2๏ธโƒฃ Use Types or Kinds of
If you mean โ€œvarietiesโ€ or โ€œcategoriesโ€ of something uncountable, you can make it countable this way.
Examples:
Three types of cheese
Different kinds of advice
Two varieties of rice
Several styles of furniture

Youโ€™re not counting the noun itself but the categories or versions of it.

3๏ธโƒฃ Use Pieces or Items
When something is uncountable as a whole, we often break it into countable โ€œpieces.โ€
Examples:
A piece of information (not an information)
Two pieces of luggage (not two luggages)
An item of clothing (not a clothing)
Several pieces of advice (not advices)

Remember:
โ€œPieceโ€ and โ€œitemโ€ are safe helpers when youโ€™re unsure how to count an uncountable noun.

4๏ธโƒฃ Use Containers or Quantifiers
We can use bottles, cups, bars, jars, and so on โ€” anything that can โ€œholdโ€ the uncountable noun.
Examples:

A bottle of milk
A bar of soap
A jar of honey
A tube of toothpaste
A can of soda

Note:
The container makes the noun countable, not the substance itself.

5๏ธโƒฃ Use Abstract Measures (When Talking About Concepts)
For abstract uncountable nouns like knowledge, love, advice, help, etc., we can quantify them using words like bit, piece, lot, deal, touch, trace, etc.

Examples:
A bit of advice

A piece of information

A lot of love
A great deal of help
A touch of sadness

These make your speech and writing sound more natural and expressive.

Diction vs Accent: Why Every Speaker Needs Diction Training

I once met a student who said,

'Coach Tricia, I really want to sound British.'
I smiled and replied,

'You donโ€™t need to sound British, you just need to sound clear and confident.'

She looked surprised, but by the end of our training, she understood that Diction is not about copying an accent; itโ€™s about clarity, correctness, and control.

1๏ธโƒฃ What is Diction?
Diction simply means the way you pronounce and articulate words so that your speech is clear and accurate.
Itโ€™s about:
Pronouncing each sound correctly
Speaking with precision
Enunciating clearly so your message is easily understood
Example:
โœ… Think (not tink)
โœ… Egg, not hegg
โœ… Ask (not axe)

Diction training helps you speak intelligently, confidently, and professionally, irrespective of the accent.

2๏ธโƒฃ What is an Accent?
Your accent is the way your pronunciation is influenced by your region, culture, or background.
Everyone has one โ€” thereโ€™s no โ€œbetterโ€ or โ€œworseโ€ accent.

โ€ขA Nigerian may have a Nigerian accent,

โ€ขA Brit speaks with a British accent,

โ€ขAn American has an American accent.

Accent = Identity + Sound pattern.

Your accent may tell where youโ€™re from, not how intelligent or fluent you are.

But poor diction can make you sound unclear, regardless of your accent.

3๏ธโƒฃ The Big Difference:
Feature
Diction
Accent
Meaning
Correct pronunciation and clarity of speech
Regional style of speaking
Goal
To make your speech clear and correct
To sound like a particular group
Can be learned?
โœ… Yes, anyone can improve

Natural, may not be necessary to change
Focus
Clarity, articulation, pronunciation
Tone, rhythm, and sound pattern

4๏ธโƒฃ Why Every Speaker Needs Diction Training
Because your message is only as powerful as your delivery.
Hereโ€™s what good diction does for you:
Makes your speech clearer

Helps your listeners understand easily

Boosts your confidence

Makes you sound polished and professional

No one respects what they canโ€™t understand.

Diction ensures your words reach the heart and mind โ€” not just the ears.

5๏ธโƒฃ So, should you change your accent?
Not at all.

You donโ€™t need to sound British or American to sound good.
You just need to speak right, not foreign.
Good diction is universal โ€” it makes your voice beautiful in any accent.

The truth:
Accent makes you sound unique,
But diction makes you understood.
When you combine both, you speak with confidence, clarity, and class.

Many teachers have found themselves unsure of which instruction to give: Fill in the blanks or Fill in the blank spaces?

Let's understand these๐Ÿ‘‡
1๏ธโƒฃ โ€˜Blankโ€™ as an adjective:
โ€˜Blank spacesโ€™ = empty spaces.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Example: There are blank spaces on the form.

โ€˜Blankโ€™ as a noun:
โ€˜A blankโ€™ = an empty spot; plural: โ€˜blanksโ€™.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Example: Fill in the blanks with the right answers.

In โ€˜Fill in the blanksโ€™, โ€˜blanksโ€™ is a noun, an idiomatic way to refer to missing items in exercises.

2๏ธโƒฃ โ€˜Fill inโ€™ means to supply missing information.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Example: Fill in the blanks on your answer sheet.
โ€˜Fill outโ€™ is often used with forms (especially in American English).
๐Ÿ‘‰ Example: Fill out the registration form carefully.
โ€˜Fillโ€™ alone simply means to put something into something.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Example: Fill the bottle with water.

3๏ธโƒฃ โ€˜Fill in the blank spacesโ€™ uses the determiner โ€˜theโ€™ and the phrase adjective + noun.
โœ… Grammatically correct but a bit wordy.
โ€˜Fill in the blanksโ€™ is shorter, clearer, and more idiomatic for class exercises.
It directly names the target (the blanks) โ€” concise and natural for teachers.

4๏ธโƒฃ Countability & Agreement
โ€˜Blankโ€™ is countable:
Singular: a blank
Plural: blanks
Always match your verbs and determiners correctly:
๐Ÿ‘‰ Fill the blank (one space)
๐Ÿ‘‰ Fill the blanks (more than one space)

5๏ธโƒฃ British English: prefers โ€œfill in the gapsโ€ or โ€œfill the gaps.โ€
American English: prefers โ€œfill in the blanks.โ€
Both are grammatically sound, choose according to your audience.

6๏ธโƒฃ When to Keep โ€œBlank Spacesโ€
Use โ€˜blank spacesโ€™ when you want to emphasise physical space or layout, not missing words.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Example: Replace the blank spaces in the form with your initials.

Ten Correct Context Sentences
1. Please fill in the blanks with the correct verb forms.

2. Fill in the blank spaces on page four of your workbook.

3. Complete the exercise by filling in the blanks.

4. Students should fill in the blanks individually before pair discussion.

5. Fill in the blanks and hand the sheet to me when you finish.

6. Make sure you donโ€™t leave any blank spaces in the application form.

7. Fill in the blanks using words from the box below.

8. For homework, fill in the blank spaces with appropriate prepositions.

9. The exam requires you to fill in the blanks in two minutes per question.

10. Please fill in the blank labelled โ€œDateโ€ at the top of the page.

Final Tip for Teachers
โœ… Both โ€˜Fill in the blanksโ€™ and โ€˜Fill in the blank spacesโ€™ are grammatically correct.
However, meticulous English teachers prefer โ€˜Fill in the blanksโ€™ because it is shorter, idiomatic, and widely accepted in academic English.
