CHARACTER BEFORE RECOGNITION
Many people desire recognition, influence and leadership positions, but only few are willing to undergo the character development process that is required to sustain them.
We must understand that recognition attracts attention.
Character on its own will determine what you will do with that attention.
You may become popular through appearance, wealth, position, social media or association with influential people.
However, you must understand that popularity cannot permanently conceal dishonesty, indiscipline, arrogance and most importantly incompetence.
Now what is Character?
Character refers to that moral qualities, values and behaviour that guide your decisions, especially when nobody is closely watching.
This includes honesty, responsibility, self-control, loyalty, courage, humility and respect for others, big or small.
Your character shouldn't only do what is right because people are watching, rather it should be because you have personally come to a point of having accepted the right conducts as a standard.
Let's not forget that position does not automatically produce leadership,
Titles may give you authority, but your character will determine whether that authority will be used responsibly or not.
True leadership is demonstrated through service, responsibility, fairness and the unwavering ability to make difficult decisions without abandoning your moral standards.
What begins privately eventually appears publicly.
This is why accountability is necessary.
Accountability is allowing trusted and responsible people to question your decisions, correct our conduct and remind you of the standards you have set.
In that case, accountability is not an attack on your freedom rather It is a protection against self-deception.
Competence must accompany character as Good intentions alone are not enough.
A security professional must understand security operations.
An investigator must understand evidence, procedure and lawful investigation.
A teacher must understand the subject he or she is teaching.
A manager must know how to plan, organise, communicate and evaluate performance.
You will agree with me that Character makes a person trustworthy while Competence makes you useful.
When character and competence become your foundation, recognition becomes a responsibility rather than a trap.
