Do you remember those days at school when you had to memorise multiple pages the night before an exam?

Only to forget everything two days later.

Sadly, many students are still on this table.

So, what’s the problem with memorisation?
👉 It rarely leads to understanding
👉 It discourages curiosity
👉 It punishes creativity
👉 It rewards short-term recall, not real-world thinking

When children are given stories, visuals, and tools, they can
📌 ask better questions
📌 explain things in their own words
📌 remember longer - and apply better
📌 build confidence, instead of fear.

Because effective understanding cannot be crammed.

So instead of asking examination questions like: “Read and answer these 20 questions,” Let’s ask questions like:

👍 “How would you explain this to your younger sibling?”
👍 “What does this remind you of in real life?”
👍 “Why do you think this happened?”

In 1929, something unprecedented happened in Southeast Nigeria.

Did you hear of the Aba Women's Riot?

Thousands of women from Aba, Umuahia, and other parts of Southeast Nigeria marched in a long protest against the colonial government at the time.

They stood up against several injustices, and achieved victory.

But this story is rarely told.

And yet, it is a story that defines courage, resistance, and the power of speaking with one voice.

What happened?

Why did the women protest?

The British colonial government introduced a new tax system, one that would increase the financial burden on women and reduce their economic role.

It was the last straw in a long list of injustices from the colonial government:
- Land seizures
- Forced labour
- Removal of traditional women leaders
- Economic oppression

So, when rumours spread that a tax would be imposed on market women - the women revolted.

Over 10,000 women from different communities - including Oloko, Bende, Aba, Calabar, and Umuahia - launched a strategic, coordinated protest.

- They surrounded the warrant chief’s compounds
- Sang protest songs
- Mocked colonial administrators
- Danced defiantly in the streets

They spoke out with one voice.

It was collective power.

Why does it matter?

At the end of the day, the protest forced the colonial government to:
- Cancel the proposed tax on women, and even on men.
- Investigate its policies
- Reduce the power of warrant chiefs
- Reconsider women’s roles in governance

It marked one of the first major anti-colonial uprisings in West Africa and was led entirely by women.

But even more, it showed the power of indigenous resistance and unity.

- Why we must keep telling this story
History isn’t just about memorising local government structures.

It’s about understanding where we come from and the people who shaped our journey.

It is important for preserving Nigeria’s history.

Let’s bring stories like these back into our classrooms - back to the heart of our identity.

Because when children know where they come from, they become better informed.
