We warned. Like a voice crying in the wilderness, we told our people that this man is up to no good.
We reminded them that a man whose age, parentage, nativity, schools attended, certificates are all shrouded in mystery is unworthy of the highest office of the land.
We said that a man who had the gut to publish a school which had not been established as the institution where he was spawned is not to be trusted.
We saw his duplicity many many miles ahead.
Some people say he is showing his true colours.
But we knew before now that a leopard never changes its spots.
We reminded them that a renowned drug baron can't be a moral compass for an ailing nation.
We said that a man who can't present one person who attended the same school with him is not only untrustworthy but despicable.
But they shushed up and said we are envious of his suavity.
They call him master strategist.
They say he has never lost any election.
They say he is a Machiavelli.
Like Stalin, Hi**er, Pol Pot, Pinochet, he knows how to clinch power.
Yet they say he is a democract.
When we reminded them of his dictatorial tendencies, they referred us to NADECO.
They said he stood for Abiola and that Abacha placed a bounty on his head for his unwavering stance for democracy.
They said that like Kongi, he espouses not only the tenets of democracy but embodies them.
But fewer than three years into power, all doubts are cleared.
All Thomases have realized, albeit too late, that he never believed in any of the things he formerly preached.
He fought Obasanjo to a stand still. The state of emergency in two states under OBJ was bravely condemned.
But he has done worse.
He didn't not only declare a state of emergency under the pretense of restoring democracy, he suspended an elected governor and the entire state house of assembly members.
The servile judiciary couldn't muster the courage to give a verdict on the matter until the humiliated governor was reinstated to complete his tenure as a puppet to his godfather.
The latest from this man we warned against was pardoning murderers, convicted drugs peddlers, and many other malefactors.
But this country hasn't seen anything yet.
By the time he is done with us, we will understand that we should never have allowed him near that exalted office.
In ancient Greece Midas turned everything he touched into gold.
Our own Midas turns everything he touches into ruins.
Under this man the Daura-born general, with all his cluelessness and incompetence, is dearly missed.
This country has never been this terrible.
The bar is beyond low.
