Who likes you matter a lot. Don't focus too much on people who don't you,because many don't like themselves.

Story time

During my orientation at the college, the faculty mentioned that those who are enrolled in the certificate programs would do the work experience which is for short period say 4-6 weeks while those who are enrolled in diploma program would take cooperative education (coop).

The coop technically show last for 5 months and 2 weeks or more. This is determined by how early you get placement and the faculty would assess individual's cases. I was overwhelmed 😪 by the time the previous class were doing their tradeshow.

In December 2023, I had 3 opportunities; personal support worker, and guest service receptionist in a busy recreation facility which is a sector in the Hospitality & Tourism industry and the 3rd one I can't remember what the job title was. I attended the interview for the personal support worker and recreation facility jobs and both offered me a job.

The decision making time, the personal support worker job would pay me more, and give me more hours, the guest service receptionist job wouldn't give me enough hours and the pay of course is the minimum wage. However, I settled for the guest service receptionist offer for the following reason.

1.) My interviewer who is now my supervisor wanted to know beyond my resume. She asked at the interview who are you, not what is in your resume, I read that before you were invited. I sat back in the chair I was provided, crossed my legs and she turned her seat and did the same. I took some minutes and told who I was. She listened , she looked into my eyes and I did the same, she didn't write during this time.

2) After about 3 mins of talking about myself. We talked about Nigeria, and I realised she loved jollof Rice.

After that Day on Dec 1, 2023. She said, " send XYZ documents, get me 3 references and I told those I would give out their emails and cell. I told her give 2 days to get in touch with them and revert. On December 12, 2023 I began my training.

Reassurance & Reaffirmation

Let me tell you about my instructors. All of them were amazing. I am an energetic person and a team player and I can also be a solo winner. The best of us experience energy drop because of numerous factors which could either be psychological, physical, emotional and so on. When this happens, we often need Reassurance & Reaffirmation.

One of the courses I enrolled in waGuest Service Essentials which was a -double-deep with Food Services. We have 2 instructors in one space and the synergy was out of this world. I loved it because I got to meet new people from the city, learn new things about the city outside of the college's teaching and bond with my colleagues.

February this year my energy dropped drastically thank God for the gift of family, friends and loved ones including my instructors and the college support came through. The instructor in this picture is Gath Brown. If he sees me in the college hallway he will say my name very loud.

On this day, which was in February. We had his course with Bradley MacDonald. Immediately, Brad saw me he said "Bemi, how are you? I told him how I was feeling. We discussed briefly and promised to revisit the discussion after class which he did.

Here is What stood out for me and immediately increased my energy from Let me say 45% to 70% or 80%. When GB came in, I was at the bar setting up as usual he said my name loud and said how are you, I said Gath, I am good. He walked a few steps away and in a very short while he turned and walked back to me at the bar and said- Bemi, you are not good, you are fantastic! I didn't know where the bold smile came from and believe me. I completed my tasks and helped my colleagues as I always did.

I am just reflecting this morning and I thought to share about reassurance and reaffirmation. Go out today and reassure someone. Be kind, and give compliments.

I will write about my relationship with all my instructors and teachers one of these days one by one. So you all know that I am grateful. That little girl many of you groomed, reassured and reaffirmed is making you proud and it is just honourable to acknowledge you all.
