The Pointer Series with Alhaytham

About Alhaytham

As a long time believer in the relationship between passion and success, Abdullah Adedokun loves to say that he does the things he likes. He grew up in the suburbs of Lagos, learning about God through the occasional chattering of his many homeschooled siblings.

He teaches the Qur'an and works with brands to identify their social media strategies, combining his passion for learning about people with his writing skills to create staller social media strategies.

He's always had a hard time choosing between watching Baby Olympics and writing his next verse of poetry, or choosing between learning a new Arabic word and learning what Ibnul Qayyim has to say about God.

Education is not a one-way route.

People in society have limited education to a one-way thing, consciously and unconsciously. i.e, conventional schooling. Try to do it any other way and all of a sudden you are not educated.

Education is broad, significant, and diverse. It is not just about sitting in classrooms and getting certified. It is more about the knowledge and skills you are able to acquire, even if it's acquired online, on the street, in your own house, and from whoever is worthy of impacting beneficial knowledge on you or even if you learn on your own.

Education is not restricted to a particular study. Education is not limited to western education. Islamic education is the most important and beautiful education. There is societal education, there's family education and lots more. How education is limited to western education is strange.

However (type and means) you choose to be educated, ensure you make it worth your time and efforts. Perfect your education and make it manifest in you.

Q&A Session for unschooled Webiner

Question

Is hifdh enough with regards to learning about our Deen or do we have to go to other standard Madrasah to learn other aspects of the Deen?*

The fact is that hifdh is not enough. If one is still very young, the scholars advised that we start with hifdh because it is something that often becomes very difficult when we grow older.

But, if we look at its importance, we'd see that memorising the Qur'an is not the only important thing out of all the things we need to learn regarding the Deen, because memorising the Qur'an would not make you any different from the Khawarij - the terrorists who bomb people. They also memorize the Qur'an but they do not UNDERSTAND the Qur'an.

So, if you have to choose between understanding the Qur'an: learning Arabiyyah, learning the books of tafsir and acting upon them etc and just memorising the Qur'an, then, the former is more important.

As a matter of fact, at the time when the prophet (peace be upon him) died, there were about 300,000 of his companions and only about 10 of them had memorized the Qur'an. Some of the companions reported that they never used to memorise anything from the Qur'an until they understood its meaning and why it was revealed before they'd go on to memorise the next verse.

Memorising the Qur'an is not even close to being enough. You'll need to understand aqeedah: Aqeedah deals with 'Who is Allaah?' 'What are the attributes of Allaah?' These are the things that are going to teach you how to have a relationship with Allaah.

We have the aspect that that of Aqeedah, of talking about the day of Qiyamah and a lot of different things like that.

Also, books that have to do with softening the heart by Ibn Qayyim and Ibn Tamiyyah; they are books that have to be studied. Other aspects of the Deen too like: Tafsir, Fiqh etc.

Question:

Is there anything like I can't cope with learning from online classes? If one is in such situation, how can one solve it?

Answer:

Naturally, for many of us, there are ways we learn better. There are people who do not like to be taught everything, they prefer to explore on their own, only for some things to be pointed out to them.
And there are people who like to be taught everything.

If you know that online learning is not your natural thing (like you are bit into it), you should try to look for a physical place where you can learn from.

But, ruling out online learning completely these days is going to make you miss out on a lot of opportunities to learn easily and freely.

When you consider the time you spend on going to physical classes and all, they usually end up being a waste of time. When you have a situation of someone who don't have a physical class to learn something they want to learn, it is compulsory on such a person to tweak their environment in a way that will be possible for them to learn online.

They need to ask themselves that, what exactly makes it difficult to learn online? Why I'm I unable to learn online?

Is it like I just don't feel comfortable or I don't understand what is being explained or there is no competition?

So, when you identify the problem, it's going to be easy to solve it.

For example, you find out that when you take online classes, you don't really learn fast or something. It might be because in online classes it's very easy to get distracted.

So you might want to ensure that whenever you want to take classes, maybe 30 minutes before the class, you are going to lock all of the apps on your phone except the one that you want to use for the class. And another 30 minutes after to revise for the class.

Throw back๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ

First, what does "Grades" mean to us? 1

You see, this can not be thoroughly discussed without exploring what "School" in itself is. At Asides School Whatโ€™s Up, "School" denotes an array of things that range from a societal tradition up to oneโ€™s hobby -yes, thereโ€™s that.

Isnโ€™t it obvious that we enjoy discussing School so much that it shows up in almost all of our articles? Thatโ€™s by the way.

Some of our team members view schooling as a hobby, while some see it as a partial engagement. Some see it as a pursuit of new knowledge, a quest for employment, experience, connections, and sadly -oh so sadly- for some it's a waste of their time. They don't even want to be there. Relax, they all have their respective reasons............Continue reading here: https://link.medium.com/M7kPsnMZxmb

Colleague A: "Well, having first class is good. I mean, apart from my parents' pressure on me, it's something I want too, but beyond the grades, I really want to know this work and be very good in the practical aspect of it.

Colleague B: "Hmm. I get what you mean. There's that fear of performing as viable as your grades preach.

Colleague A: "Exactly. Okay, Pelumi you too think about it, with this my first class CGPA, do you think if I stand beside Hameed with all his expertise and proficient know-how, do you think anyone will even look my way? Yet, even though Hameed doesn't have the first-class grade on his e-portal, everyone knows and everyone can attest to the wonders he can do with his brain..............Read fully here: https://link.medium.com/mrBFFgl9Kmb

A lot of parents happen to urge or even pressurize their children into studying some courses named professional courses even when it is glaring the child has an interest in something else.

They want to be called the doctor's mum, the barrister's dad, mama engineer and so on. They find no joy in their child's choice. "How will you study education? That course is not even lucrative. I'm hearing this for the first time," are examples of things they would say.

At the same time, students ignorantly choose to study some courses all in the name of prestige. They want to identify themselves with a particular profession while in reality, they are not even up to it or it negates most of their beliefs and abilities.

Studying a course is more than studying for prestige, it's not a decision you should make raptly. Choosing a course of study should be an informed decision to make. Check your beliefs, abilities, and skills.

Don't choose a course only because it's prestigious, lucrative or your area brother whom you value studied same. There's a lot more you should enquire about.

For many of us, we are in it already and if there's something we could do, it is to orientate that young lad we know and to sensitize our younger ones and even parents to help our siblings make an informed decision.

Make an informed decision and help others make one
