TEAM or BREAD?

Both words have EA, but the sound is different!
👥 TEAM, CLEAN, DREAM → /ē/
🍞 BREAD, HEAD, READY → /ĕ/
This is why I encourage children to do more than memorise letter patterns. They need to look at the word, listen to the sound, blend and check.
Little strategies like these can help children become more confident readers.

Sometimes, going back to the basics is not a step backward, it is exactly what the child needs to move forward.

A child who can't sit still may not be a difficult child.

Sometimes, we are too quick to say, this child is too restless, he doesn't listen, she can never sit down.

But have we stopped to ask why?

Young children are not designed to sit quietly for long periods like adults.

They need to move, they need to explore, they need to touch things, talk, play and sometimes even change positions while learning.

Movement can actually support learning, especially in the early years.

Instead of expecting a young child to sit still for too long, we can make learning more active.

Try:

👉🏽 Shorter activities
👉🏽 Movement breaks
👉🏽 Songs and actions
👉🏽 Hands-on activities
👉🏽 Learning games
👉🏽 Giving the child opportunities to stand and move

Of course, we still teach children how to listen and follow instructions. But we also need to consider what is developmentally appropriate.

A child who is constantly moving is not automatically a difficult child.

Sometimes, the way we are teaching may need to change.

Let's learn to understand children before we label them.

3 signs your child's learning foundation may need strengthening 👇🏾

1️⃣ They memorise but struggle to apply.

They may remember what you've taught but struggle when the task changes.

2️⃣ They perform with help but struggle independently.

This may indicate that the underlying skill isn't secure yet.

3️⃣ They become frustrated very quickly.

Sometimes frustration is a sign that the task is sitting above the child's current skill level.

What can you do?

Go back. Simplify. Practise. Repeat.

Then gradually build again.

Remember, Going back is not failure.

It is part of building mastery

OW can make TWO sounds

When children learn phonics systematically, it’s important to teach them that OW can say /ow/ as in “cow” and /ō/ as in “snow.”

🐄 OW like COW: cow, how, now, down, town, brown
❄️ OW like SNOW: snow, grow, show, blow, slow, know

The goal is not just memorising words. Help children look at the word, try the sound, and read it in context.

3 things I would do if my 4-year-old isn't reading yet.

If my 4-year-old wasn't reading yet, I wouldn't panic.

I also wouldn't compare my child with another 4-year-old who is already reading sentences.

Instead, I would go back to the foundation.

1️⃣ I would build oral language.

I would talk to my child more.

We would describe pictures, tell stories, sing songs, name objects around the house, and have simple conversations.

A child needs a strong language foundation before reading becomes easier.

2️⃣ I would work on sound awareness.

I wouldn't rush straight into memorising words.

I would play simple sound games:

👉 What sound can you hear at the beginning of sun?

👉 Can you find something that starts with /m/?

👉 What word rhymes with cat?

These little activities help children become more aware of the sounds in words.

3️⃣ I would read together every day.

Even if my child cannot read independently yet, I would still read aloud to them.

We would look at pictures, talk about the story, point to words and predict what might happen next.

Just 10–15 minutes of shared reading every day can become a powerful routine.

Remember, not reading yet does not mean a child cannot learn to read.

Sometimes, what a child needs is not pressure.

They need the right foundation, patient guidance and consistent practice.

Before we ask a child to achieve more, we need to ask: “Is the foundation strong?

In early childhood education, foundations matter.

A child who struggles with reading may not need more difficult books.

They may need stronger phonics foundations.

A child who struggles with writing may not need more copying.

They may need stronger fine-motor and letter-formation skills.

A child who struggles with mathematics may not need more worksheets.

They may need stronger number sense and hands-on experiences.

This is why I believe we should not rush children through learning just to say they have “covered” a topic.

Strong foundations make future learning easier.

Give children time to:

• Explore
• Ask questions
• Practise
• Make mistakes
• Repeat
• Build confidence

The early years are not something we should rush through.

They are the foundation upon which future learning is built.

Build the foundation well, and the child has something strong to build on.
