Soil is one of the least understood but most important requirements for sustainable agriculture.
Here are few facts you should know about the soil.
๐ธ Soil can die. Living things including worms, fungi, insects, and other organic matter are found in soil. More than 50 billion different life forms can be found in just one handful of healthy soil.
The soil can suffer from deforestation, intensive farming, industrial activities and climate change and natural processes. This can lead to physical effects (such as erosion of fertile topsoil), chemical effects (such as acidification of soil), or biological effects (such as loss of microbes). Over time, this can make the soil weaker due to less nutrient absorption and drainage of water and can eventually lead to its death.
๐ธ One inch of topsoil (the upper layer of soil that contains the most organic matter and microorganisms) can take anywhere between 500 and 1,000 years to form. Its formation results from the interaction of climate, rocks and living organisms.
๐ธ Currently, it is believed that plants and soils combined absorb approximately 30% of Carbon dioxide (CO2) produced by human activities each year.
The soil is more than just the dirt you see!

Permaculture is a system of farming that involves integrating plants, animals, and humans in a harmonious and regenerative way.
The idea behind Permaculture is creating sustainable systems where plants๐ชด๐ป๐, animals๐๐๐, and people๐ญ๐งโ๐คโ๐ง work together like a team. Instead of just taking from the land, permaculture teaches you to give back to it too.
Think of permaculture as farming or gardening like our ancestors used to do, but with modern knowledge added in. Instead of using chemicals that harm the land๐๏ธ and water๐, permaculture uses natural ways to nourish the soil and plants.
For example, in a permaculture garden, you might see plants that help each other grow, like some trees giving shade to others or certain plants keeping pests away from crops. You might also find compost piles where food scraps and organic waste turn into valuable nutrients for the soil, just like the way our grandparents used to make rich, dark soil from kitchen scraps.
Permaculture helps maintain soil fertility, conserve water, and reduce reliance on harmful chemicals, leading to healthier and more productive crops.
How can you start Permaculture?
The first step is educating yourself more on permaculture. You can check online resources about permaculture to understand its principles, ethics, and design techniques. A solid foundation of knowledge will guide you throughout your permaculture journey.

As Nigeria rassles with inflation and the high cost of living, it is important to prioritize your well-being and adopt strategies to cope with these challenging times. The impact of economic hardship can be daunting, but with resilience and careful planning, we can take measures to safeguard our wellbeing.
Here are practical tips to help you stay put during this period of economic uncertainty.
1. Create a detailed budget that outlines your income and all essential expenses. Tracking your spending will help identify areas where you can cut costs and make necessary adjustments to your financial planning.
2. Prioritize essential needs over wants. Cut down on non-essential expenses like dining out, entertainment, and luxury items.
3. Purchase essential items in bulk when possible, as it often leads to discounts and reduces the frequency of shopping trips, saving both time and money.
4. Conserve electricity by switching off lights and appliances when not in use. Consider using energy-efficient bulbs and appliances to lower utility bills.
5. Opt for public transportation or carpool with colleagues or neighbors to save on fuel costs and reduce wear and tear on your vehicle.
6. Extend the life of your belongings by taking good care of them. Repair items when feasible, repurpose or recycle old items, and consider buying second-hand goods if suitable.
7. Before making a purchase, compare prices from different sellers or suppliers to ensure you're getting the best value for your money.
8. Consider using a cash-only system for discretionary spending. Leaving your ATM at home can prevent impulsive buying and help you stick to your budget.
9. Review your subscriptions to streaming services, magazines, or other recurring expenses. Cancel those you rarely use or can do without.
10. Take time to evaluate purchases before making them. Ask yourself if you genuinely need the item and if it aligns with your budget and priorities. Plan your meals, create shopping lists, and avoid shopping when hungry.
We hope these tips are helpful!
Keep hope alive!
Happy new week
