A Sincere Appeal to Our Parents: Help Us to Help These Children
Assalaamu ‘alaykum warahmatullaah wabarakaatuh,
Dear Esteemed Parents,
It is with a heavy heart and deep concern that we write to you today—not to criticize, but to reflect with sincerity on the shared responsibility we all have in nurturing our children's Islamic identity.
As educators in the Madrasah, we are beginning to feel a troubling disconnect: many parents enroll their children in Islamic schools, but do not support them in practising what they are taught. It is almost as if the goal is to maintain a label—“Muslim”—without truly embracing the lifestyle it demands.
If not for identity alone, why then is it so difficult for some parents to support their children in implementing basic Islamic teachings at home and in public? Out of 100% of our students, barely 10% dress in proper Islamic attire. Many young girls wear head coverings, but with tight, form-fitting clothes that reveal rather than conceal—missing the essence of hijab as taught in Islam. It saddens us when we see a child look modest in class, only to be completely transformed when heading to secular lessons or weekend outings.
Today, one of our teachers witnessed a young female student going to her external lessons. The Ustadh was visibly shocked—not by the student herself, but by the way her clothing contradicted everything we’ve been teaching. It is through the hijab that our daughters are honored and protected, yet some parents seem afraid—as if practising Islam fully will hinder their children's success.
We all dream for our children to exceed us in life. But what kind of success are we envisioning? Is it only worldly achievement—certificates, wealth, and careers? What about the success of the Akhirah? What about taqwa, character, humility, and commitment to the deen?
Our teachers are trying—truly trying. But they are overwhelmed. They pour their hearts into shaping these young souls. Yet the very values we instill in the classroom are often undone at home, under the watch of parents. This leaves our efforts struggling for breath.
Dear parents, we beg you: partner with us. Help us to help these children. Don’t let the Madrasah become a symbolic checkbox. Let it be the foundation of your child's character, both in this life and the next.
If we want our children to grow up proud, strong, and rooted in their faith, then we must stop being afraid of Islam. Let them wear the hijab properly. Let them live by Islamic manners. Let us all be the example we wish for them.
May Allah guide us all and make our children the coolness of our eyes in both dunya and Aakhirah.
