Chord Extensions (Simple Explanation):

Chord extensions are extra notes added to basic triads (3-note chords) to make them sound richer or more colorful.

Basic Triad (3 notes):

Root + 3rd + 5th
Example: C major = C + E + G

Adding Extensions:

1. 7th – adds the 7th note from the scale

Cmaj7 = C + E + G + B

C7 (dominant) = C + E + G + Bb

2. 9th – adds the 9th (same as 2nd note, but higher)

C9 = C + E + G + Bb + D

3. 11th – adds the 11th (same as 4th)

C11 = C + E + G + Bb + D + F

4. 13th – adds the 13th (same as 6th)

C13 = C + E + G + Bb + D + F + A

Important Notes:

Extensions are usually built on dominant, major, or minor 7th chords.

Some notes may be left out to avoid a muddy sound (especially on piano).

Not all extensions are used at once; sometimes just the 7th or 9th is added.

Summary:

Chord extensions add flavor. The more you add (7th, 9th, 11th, 13th), the richer the harmony becomes.

1. What is a Key Signature?

A key signature is a set of sharp (♯) or flat (♭) symbols placed at the beginning of the staff, right after the clef. It tells us which notes are consistently sharped or flatted throughout a piece, thus indicating the tonal center (key) of the music.

For example:

If you see one sharp (F♯), you’re in the key of G major or E minor.

If you see three flats (B♭, E♭, A♭), you're in E♭ major or C minor.

2. Major and Relative Minor Keys

Each major key has a relative minor that shares the same key signature.

3. The Circle of Fifths (Memory Tool)

The Circle of Fifths helps you memorize key signatures in order of increasing sharps or flats.

Sharps (Clockwise): C → G → D → A → E → B → F♯ → C♯
(Add a sharp each time)

Flats (Counterclockwise): C → F → B♭ → E♭ → A♭ → D♭ → G♭ → C♭
(Add a flat each time)

TIP: The order of sharps is F♯, C♯, G♯, D♯, A♯, E♯, B♯
The order of flats is B♭, E♭, A♭, D♭, G♭, C♭, F♭

4. How to Read and Apply Key Signatures

When reading a piece:

Look at the key signature on the staff.

Determine if it's a major or minor key (context or tonic note usually tells you).

Apply the sharps or flats to every note on the corresponding pitch unless overridden by accidentals.

Example:

If the key signature has 2 sharps, every F and C is sharped unless notated otherwise.
