Tips for Teaching a Left-handed Child (culled)
As soon as your child develops his motor skills, heโll be showing you his dominant hand.
What should you do if itโs his left one?
First of all, says Gina Landfair, Occupational Therapist at Chicagoโs Childrenโs Memorial Hospital, donโt force a round peg into a square hole. If you suspect your childโs a lefty, donโt attempt to transform him into a righty. โThis just causes more problems later,โ
Landfair says, at around age 5, your childโs dominant hand will be very apparent. In fact, at times parents can tell at as young as age 3 which side a child prefers. Suspect your child is a lefty but not 100% sure? Try these tests: Place a ball down on the floor and ask her to pick it up and throw it. Set a spoon alongside her yogurt and watch her pick it up and eat.
Once youโre sure you have a lefty living under your roof, there are a few things to keep in mind. True, youโll raise your left-handed child the same way you would if he were right-handed. But you may face some small challenges you might not have thought about otherwise.
Probably the most significant area of concern for parents of left-handed children is writing.
According to Landfair, lefties simply cannot write with a piece of paper positioned vertically. For school age children (kindergarten to first grade), parents can help significantly by teaching them to tilt their paper toward their right, she says. Just as important, make sure your child is grasping the pen properly. Lefties have a tendency to use a โhookโ grasp so they can see what they are writing, but they should be encouraged to hold writing instruments the โrightโ way. Also, buy quick drying pens, as lefties tend to smear the ink as theyโre writing, because their hands skim over their recent work as they move on to the next section. When itโs time to introduce your child to a computer, Landfair recommends investing in a left-handed mouse.
Moving from pen to pavement, be aware that learning to tie shoes can be more challenging for lefties. Sometimes it helps to tie your shoes in front of a mirror so your left-handed child can see how she should do it. Landfair suggests letting your child practice while the shoes are off first, then try tying with them on. (In her sessions, it usually takes a lefty longer to learn to tie shoes, so have patience).
Finally, take advantage of new fangled things. The industry has become savvy, bringing to market a slew of products made just for the lefties in our midst. From school essentials like left handed notebooks, scissors, and pens, to objects that just make life a little easierโ like can openers or sports equipment, there are plenty of products designed specifically for left-handed people. Itโs worth the money to ease your childโs (and your) frustration.
According to Landfair, โThe main thing to keep in mind when teaching either a right-handed or left-handed child, is a lot of repetition.โ Kids need to do things over and over to learn a skill.
The bottom line? Stop worrying about your lefty! True, he might not do things the exact same way as the other kids on the block. But thatโs not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, studies show that left-handed people tend to have higher IQs than right-handed people.
Even though a left-handed person crosses his Tโs from right to left or hangs his clothes in the closet opposite of how a right-handed person would, thereโs no reason to think he wonโt turn out just fine, or even be first in his class. Heโll grow up just like any other child. Heโll just do it from a slightly different angle.

Teaching Your Child To Read
In the culled post below, Jenae gives practical guides on how parents and teachers can teach their children to read.
As a former first grade teacher, teaching children to read is one of my greatest passions! But because most children donโt start actually โreadingโ until around 6 years old (which is upwards of the targeted age range for my blog), I didnโt want parents to feel pressured that their 3-year old needs to start reading (which, by the way, they donโt!).
However, the information shared below is general information that is beneficial for children of all ages, whether your child is ready to read or not. Donโt implement all of these strategies at once, nor should you expect your child to be able to do everything right away. It is a process and this information is simply for you to implement when you feel your child is ready.
Please also recognize that although the suggestions below are labeled as โstepsโ, they are not necessarily in consecutive order, nor are they in order of importance. The information you will find here is simply a guide to help you see how each of the components of reading fit together!

Time after time: Exam time! Everyone is sharing tips as โget enough sleepโ or โstart studying earlyโ โ but thatโs not what weโre about to share with you! In this guide, we provide you some really valuable tips with which you are guaranteed to happily survive the stressful exam time.
1. PLANNING IS EVERYTHING
In contrast to the โschool systemโ with its fixed guidelines, rules and strict deadlines, The Child Schools focus on solid perfect work and to study smart and not hard. You somehow have to adapt to this new kind of studying โ and there wonโt be a lot of time to do so.
2. NETWORK
Social contacts are important components for successful studies. That means: network as much as you can! to boost your knowledge and skills
3. THE RIGHT TIME MANAGEMENT
Create a study plan that allows you to learn continuously. When planning your schedule, keep in mind that it is not enough to be physically present at lectures โ preparation and follow-ups are always necessary! Making a plan, especially when you are new to something should also always include some kind of flexibility. Trial โ and โ error is totally okay! If your plan doesnโt work out, change it according to your needs and try again! One thing that is really important: properly assess your workload and donโt overtax yourself
5. DONโT LOSE YOURSELF, EVEN WITH TIME PRESSURE AND PANIC
For this purpose, we have two valuable tips from interesting studies for you:
Highlighters donโt actually do anything except color your books in bright colors! Studies have shown that your brain is under-challenged when reading and highlighting. It seems so easy, underlining a few words and you start to absorb all of the information. Well, unfortunately the signals sent by colored markers are simply too weak for your brain to really remember. Start taking your own notes โ this simply works better and is also way more efficient.
6. CREATE THE PERFECTION STUDY ENVIRONMENT
It goes without saying that the right environment plays a big role in your learning success. Some learning locations hide innumerable dangers of distraction โ the community kitchen, your local pub or coffee houses are such places. In order to not get distracted, keep these three key factors for effective learning in mind: daylight, fresh air and quiet.
7. TAKE A BREAK
When studying, you should not forget about taking breaks! By taking breaks you will learn more effectively and there is no risk of being completely exhausted by the time the exam comes up. Therefore: Leave your desk behind from time to time, take a short walk outside and have a bite to eat.
8. KEEP YOUR STUDY MATERIALS TOGETHER
Keep your study plan up to date and always make sure that all of your study materials are complete and correct. And that doesnโt only apply to your notes, you should always have necessary materials to hand: books, pens, paper for example.
9. TOGETHERNESS MAKES STRONGER
Choose the members of your study group very carefully.

Play is an important part of the childโs learning process. The role of play in the development of young children has been well documented. Hereโs a look at the โsix stages of playโ as outlined by noted sociologist Mildred Parten.
Parten studied play while at the Institute of Child Development in Minnesota. Her study suggested that when children engaged in active playtime, they learned how to interact with other children, cooperate, share and make friends.
Parten stated that childrenโs play changed as they developed, going through six distinct stages that generally, but not always, corresponded to childrenโs ages:
1. Unoccupied play โ The child is seemingly not engaged or actively playing with others at all. They may remain stationary and be engaged in random movements with no objective. This stage of play is mostly seen in newborns and infants, between the ages of 0 and 2. This is an important setting stage for future play exploration and development.
2. Solitary play โ During this stage of play, children will often play alone, with toys different from those of others, and be uninterested or unaware of what others around them are doing. This stage of play is most commonly seen in young toddlers between the ages of 2 and 3, but it is important for children of all age groups to participate in from time to time. Solitary play is common at a young age because cognitive, physical and social skills have yet to fully develop. This type of play is important because it teaches children how to entertain themselves.
3. Onlooker play โ Onlooker play is when a child observes others playing but does not join the play. They will frequently engage in other forms of social interactions such as conversations to learn more about the game or play that is going on. This type of play is common in younger children between the ages of 2ยฝ and 3ยฝ, but can take place at any age.
4. Parallel play โ This occurs when children play side-by-side from one another, but there is a lack of group involvement amongst them. They will typically be playing with similar toys and often times mimic one another. Parallel play is common in toddlers between the ages of 2 ยฝ and 3 ยฝ but can take place at any age. Although it looks like there is very little contact between them, these children are learning valuable social skills and actually learn quite a lot from one another. For this reason, parallel play is important as a transitory stage for the development of social maturity, which is key to later stages of play.
5. Associative play โ At this stage, children will begin to play together, but not focused towards a common goal. A child will be more interested in playing with other children around them than the individual toys they play with. Associative play is slightly different than parallel play as children may continue to play separately from one another, but they start to become more involved in what others around them are doing. You may find children playing or trading with the same toys or actively talking with or engaging one another, but no rules of play are being set. This type of play typically begins around ages 3 or 4, extending into the pre-school age. This is an important stage of play because it develops necessary skills such as cooperation, problems solving, and language development.
6. Cooperative play โ Cooperative play is where play finally becomes organized into groups and teamwork is seen. Children are now interested in both the people that they are playing with as well as the activity at hand. The group is more formalized with a leader, as well as other assigned roles, and play organizes around accomplishing group goals or specific tasks. Cooperative play begins in the late preschool period, between the ages of 4 and 6. It is uncommon to see children reach this stage until these later years, as it requires an evolved set of organizational skills and a higher degree of social maturity. Cooperative play is indeed the culmination, bringing together all the skills learned across previous stages into action, giving the child the necessary skills for social and group interactions.
Play is an important part of a childโs day. It is where they learn to work cooperatively, expand their vocabulary and bring their imaginations to life. We should recognize the importance of play and place priority on making certain that our children enjoy many forms of play throughout their school day. To begin and end each day, the children can experience free play where they can use their classroom supplies without structure.
Throughout the day, the teachers can lead various forms of play to encourage language development, reinforce math skills and encourage teamwork. It will be exciting to see the different stages demonstrated in our classrooms as the children grow into cooperative play and more detailed imaginative play the older they get! As play is closely tied to the cognitive, socio-emotional, and motor development of young children, it should remain an important part of early childhood programs.
