What a powerful day we had today. Truly. 🙌🏽

Today we opened one of the most important areas of the Montessori classroom — the *Language Area.*

And by the time we finished — nothing was the same again.

Because today my students discovered the TRUTH about how children actually learn to read and write. ✨

We learned that reading does NOT come first — *WRITING comes first* in Montessori. 📝

We learned that we do NOT teach letter NAMES — we teach letter *SOUNDS.* 🔤

We learned that a child does not need to hold a pencil to start writing — they can WRITE with their fingers using the Moveable Alphabet. ✋🏽

We went into *Phonetics and Phonics* — the science and the teaching. We even learned the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) — something most teachers in Africa never even see. 🌍

Today was not just a training. Today was a *transformation.*

Every teacher who walked out of that room now knows how to teach reading and writing the way it should have always been taught. 📚

I am so proud of every single one of them. 🙏🏽

The children they go back to serve are the luckiest children in Africa. Because they now have teachers who KNOW.

📚✨ A GLIMPSE INTO DAY 2 OF OUR PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE TRAINING! 🎓

Yesterday was another powerful and practical session, and I’m excited to share a few highlights with you! ❤️

We went deeper into Phonetics — the science of speech sounds, and our participants explored important areas such as:

🔹 Scarborough’s Reading Rope — understanding the many strands that come together to produce skilled reading.

🔹 Phonetics vs Phonology vs Phonics — clearing up one of the biggest areas of confusion among teachers.

🔹 The organs of speech — understanding how the lips, tongue, teeth, jaw, vocal folds and other speech organs work together to produce sounds.

🔹 Phonemes — understanding the smallest sound units that can change meaning.

🔹 IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) — learning to recognise and use phonetic symbols accurately.

🔹 Minimal pairs — using words such as pat/bat and sip/zip to hear and practise sound contrasts.

🔹 Voiced and voiceless sounds — developing greater awareness of how speech sounds are produced.

And this is only a glimpse! 🎯

The training is practical, interactive and intensive, and participants are not just learning definitions — they are developing the knowledge and skills needed to teach literacy and reading more effectively.

Most literacy problems in African classrooms are not intelligence problems — they are instruction problems. A child who cannot read by age eight is almost never a child who cannot learn; they are a child who was taught the wrong thing, in the wrong order, at the wrong time. This programme gives educators the science, the sequence, and the strategies to teach reading properly from the sound up — and to rescue the children who have already been failed by weaker instruction.

📚 WHY CAN SOME CHILDREN RECITE A–Z BUT STILL CANNOT READ A SIMPLE WORD?
