Dubem is a 5 year old, his teacher keeps complaining that the mother is not helping him with his school work, while his mum on the other hand says Educator Bisi does not know how to do her job.

He keeps forgetting past events and finds it difficult to coordinate or even carry out simple tasks like his mates.

Whose fault is it then; is it Dubem, Mama Dubem or Educator Bisi? No one's fault except that something went wrong somewhere that affected Dubem either mentally, emotionally or psychologically - as a result, he has learning disability.

WHAT ARE LEARNING DISABILITIES?

Learning disabilities are disorders that affect the ability to understand or use spoken or written language, do mathematical calculations or even codinate movement.

It affects the acquisition, organisation, retention, understanding or use of verbal and non-verbal information.

The first picture tells it all. Before you s***k or scold that child, think twice.

Cerebral Palsy happens to be a life-long disease caused by complications during pregnancy and delivery.

Dear mother in labour, please do not allow religion, sentiment or even ignorance cost you, your child and family this life-long pain. Always listen and obey doctor's instructions, because CP children are dependent for life and at the end of the day, it is you the mother that will bear the grunt.

Be wise and learn.

As a special needs educator currently on Internship, I realised that what children with Additional Needs actually need from you is EMPATHY, not sympathy. You can have SYMPATHY for the parents, not the child.

"The education of even a small child therefore should not aim at preparing him for school but for life."
