Ever caught yourself saying these? 👀
In this slide video, we're exposing 5 sneaky English expressions many of us use daily—but might be getting wrong (especially those tricky prepositions! 😅).
Here are the ones we covered:
"I'm schooling at [school name]" → Wrong preposition! Correct: "I attend [school name]" or "I'm being schooled at..."
"I'm craving for fried rice" → No "for" needed! Correct: "I'm craving fried rice." (Crave is direct—no preposition when it's a verb!)
"You must be ON your best behaviour." → Actually spot-on! The idiom is "on your best behaviour" (not "at" or "in"). Great job if you got this one right! 🇬🇧
"I am a student OF JSS 3" → Common mix-up! In standard English, it's often "I'm a student in JSS 3"
Why does fixing these even matter when we're just speaking? 🤔
Good grammar in spoken English isn't about being "perfect" or "showing off"—it's about clarity, confidence, and respect for the person listening.
When you use correct structures:
Your message flows smoothly—no awkward pauses or confusion.
You sound more professional and fluent (huge boost in job interviews, presentations, or even casual chats with people outside Nigeria).
You build real confidence—less hesitation means you speak up more!
People understand you faster and take you seriously (whether it's school, work, or social media).
Bottom line: Small fixes = BIG impact on how people see you and how well you connect.
Which of these have YOU been guilty of? 😬 Be honest in the comments—drop your number or the one that hits home!

COMMON CLASSROOM MISTAKE:
Many incorrectly use the phrase "RUB OFF THE BOARD" in the classroom.
However, "RUB OFF" is a phrasal verb that means to acquire a quality or trait from someone else through association.
The correct to use in this context is "RUB OUT THE BOARD", which means to erase or remove writing from a surface.
Remember, precise language matters!
Using the correct phrase, "RUB OUT", ensures clear communication and sets a good example for students.

IT'S VS ITS
"It's" is the contraction of "it is" or "it has". It must only be used in a sentence where the sentence would normally be read as "it is" or "it has".
For example:
"It's a beautiful day" would normally be read as "It is a beautiful day". In this case, "it is" has been reduced to "it's"
"It has been a decade" would be read as "It's been a decade"
On the other hand, ITS is a possessive pronoun. It shows ownership. It tells us that something belongs to "It" or nouns without gender.
E.g.
"The cat shook its head". Here, ITS shows that the belongs to the cat.
