People believe Yoruba is difficult, and that’s true in part. But it’s mostly because we are not taught the rules of the language. We learned English—its grammar, sounds, etc.—everyday of our formative years, and some of us go ahead to bag a tertiary degree, but Yoruba does not get a quarter of that attention.

Nasal vowels and syllabic nasals can be confusing. For example, is ‘n’ in Funmi a nasal consonant? The answer is no, because the word is fún mi, not fu n mi. Watch the linked video for more on syllabic nasal.

Did you know this about the Yoruba letter ‘n’?
n as a consonant is pronounced as /nee/.
n as a syllable (syllabic nasal) is pronounced as /ng/.

We have different types of Yoruba proverbs. One of them is called ìtándòwe—proverb that was culled out of a historical event.

The Alade proverb was culled from the story of Alade whose generosity tempered with strict principles became his doom.

We use it to deter people from greediness and covetousness. However, it can also swing another way: flexibility is expedient at times.
