Research tell us that from nursery through secondary school, a child would spend over 13,000 hours ( about 1.484 years) of their developing Brain's time in school with teachers. Yet, we stop them from talking when they need to.

Can you imagine being asked not to talk for over a year? Well, that's exactly what we put our students through when we forbid them from speaking. So if we constantly forbid them from speaking in class, especially in the formative years, we would be stalling some major Brain development.

The irony is that when they get to the University, we expect them to talk. Last session, we had a 5% grade allocated for speaking in class for my 400 level students. Imagine! It's rather almost too late at this point. They have already become less expressive.

It's important to note here that normal child chattering does not equal noise making.

We need to rethink hushing children when they need to speak!
