1. LIE (no object, you don’t put anything down)
Present: lie
Past: lay
Past participle: lain

a. I want to lie down.
b. Yesterday, I lay on the bed.
c. I have lain there all day.

2. LAY (has an object – you put something down)

Present: lay
Past: laid
Past participle: laid

a. Please lay the book on the table.
b. She laid the phone down.
c. They have laid the foundation.
