Nasarawa State Government has unveiled a series of activities to commemorate the 30th statehood anniversary on the creation of the mineral-rich state.
The state was created on the 1st October 1996 by the military administration of late Gen. Sani Abacha from the Old Plateau State.
Briefing newsmen at a world press conference in Lafia, Chairman of the 30th anniversary ceremony, Dr. Emmanuel Akabe said the event would continue to strengthen shared identity, acknowledge the contributions of founding fathers and chart a way forward towards the sustainable future of the state.
Akabe, who is the state’s Deputy Governor, added that a number of itinerary had been lined up including anniversary lectures to be delivered by former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega and Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Kukah.
Prof. Jega, a former Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University Kano, will deliver his lecture on the topic: Nasarawa State@30: From Foundation to Transformation while his counterpart lecturer, Bishop Kukah will speak on Unity in Diversity: Three Decades of Building a Cohesive Nasarawa State, Issues, Challenges and Prospects.
The anniversary, Dr. Akabe noted, will begin on Friday with Juma’at Prayers at the Old Secretariat Juma’at Mosque, projects commissioning across the state, interdenominational church service at St. William’s Cathedral Lafia, visits to correctional facilities for prerogative of mercy.
Others, the deputy governor mentioned; Nasarawa Expo, a youth-talent show to exhibit potential and creative capabilities of the state to the global community.
He disclosed that on Tuesday carnival procession and display of cultural cuisines will take place.
“There shall be Inter-States Novelty Football Match (Plateau and Nasarawa), Plateau-Nasarawa @30 reunion, Award of Distinction and lastly the Independence Day Celebration and 30th Anniversary of the Creation of Nasarawa State”.
He called on the media to promote the state in all ramifications for the sustainable development of the state.
The briefing was attended by commissioners of information, education, environment and local government, media veterans, heads of media establishments in the state.
