KWASU, NDLEA Unite Against Drug Abuse

The Vice-Chancellor of Kwara State University (KWASU), Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, has reaffirmed the University's zero-tolerance of drug abuse and other social vices, urging students to remain law-abiding and uphold the institution's rules and regulations.

Professor Jimoh gave the warning during a drug abuse sensitisation programme jointly organised by KWASU and the Kwara State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at the University's Mini Convocation Arena.

Describing drug abuse as a serious social and public health challenge, the Vice-Chancellor said its consequences extend beyond individuals to families and society. He stressed that sustained education and awareness campaigns remain the most effective strategy for preventing drug abuse among young people.

He added that the partnership between KWASU and the NDLEA reflects the university's commitment to working with relevant government and non-governmental organisations to protect students and promote a drug-free community, extending the campaign to residents of Malete.

Speaking at the event, the Kwara State Commander of the NDLEA, CN Fatima Abiola Popoola, highlighted the psychological, social, and legal consequences of drug abuse. She called on parents, landlords, community leaders, university management, and other stakeholders to work together in tackling the menace.

Also speaking, the Director of the KWASU Senior Citizens Centre, Dr. Nimat Idris warned that drug abuse can cause irreversible damage to vital organs, including the liver and kidneys. She encouraged students to stay focused on their academic and personal goals while resisting negative peer influence.

The sensitisation programme forms part of KWASU's ongoing efforts to foster a safe, healthy, and drug-free learning environment for its students and the wider community.
