TREE-PLANTING; A WORKING TOOL FOR COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
By Adamu Abubakar Kumo
Tree-planting as one of the aspects of environmental reclamation is not only an environmental concept but also an instrument that can be used to bring economic prosperity and overall community development.
Nowadays, there is no economic value seen in forest resources especially trees, but there is value seen in the development project for which forest resources are required. Surely, this is not the way to go. We need to grow trees in ways that bring prosperity to common man.
Tree planting and farmer livelihoods are inseparably linked. Agroforestry sustains and diversifies farming systems and provides enhanced food security where people have alternative food sources, such as fruit or nuts, to harvest apart from other crops.
Furthermore, tree-planting can bring about community development by producing harvestable forest products to households such as timber, firewood, food, medicine, and other products. These products can be sold, if accessible markets exist, or used for subsistence purposes instead of purchasing costly market products.
Farmers or communities can also replant forests on land that is more marginally suited for agriculture, such as steep slopes or barren lands, which can provide many benefits without taking fertile farming land out of production. This helps boost farmer's income and increases productivity.
High quality pasture from the leaves of the planted trees can serve as feed for cattle and other livestock which consequently increases milk and meat production. This can go along way in curbing farmer-herder conflicts in our communities thereby improving security.
Erosion as an environmental problem can be effectively controlled by tree-planting. Trees when planted, give protection to watersheds, maintain clean water supplies and prevent flooding.
In nutshell, tree-planting brings about community development by providing food security, generating
employment, increasing individual's income, protecting the environment, and above all, providing security and overall economic development and prosperity of the society.
