USING FLASHCARDS IN TEACHING JOLLY PHONICS

Flashcards have a vital role to play in every Jolly phonics lesson. A teacher cannot teach a jolly lesson without flashcard due to its importance.
Show flashcard is a step under Learning the letter sound. It helps pupils to learn how to pronounce the letter sounds correctly. As you flash the cards pupils will be saying the sounds repeated. It helps pupils to identify and say a particular sound correctly everywhere.
Tips on how to successfully teach this step to pu
1) Show flashcard to pupils. You may ask them to say the sound which they could guess from the sound they hear in the story or you tell them the sound.
2) Teacher should flash the cards to different angles in the class to ensure all pupils have a clear view of the card.
3) Flashcards should be boldly written on cards for pupils to see them clearly.
4) Flashcards should be held up for everybody to see.
5) Teachers' fingers shouldn't cover any part of the letter sounds. Flashcards should be held by the edges.
6) Teacher and pupils should repeat the sounds twice or thrice as the card is flashed. This improves assimilation.
7) Teacher should ask pupils to say the sound and do the action together twice or thrice.
8) Note that sounds should be said according to the times shown in the action box on each page of pupils book one. Example sound 'a' is said 4 times when doing the action.

Other tips on the use of Flashcard ;

1) Flashcards must be used everyday by the Jolly teacher.
2) Use Flashcards during revision of the learnt sounds at the beginning of each Jolly lesson.
3) Use flashcard when introducing a new letter sound in the 3rd step.
4) Use flashcards when doing blending games such as blending songs, pointing blending, team blending, bouncy blending etc
5) Use tricky words flashcards to ease your teaching of tricky words since from primary one when you cover all the sounds.

NO NORMAL CHILD IS A DULL LEARNER

A dull child is an abnormal child that suffers from mental retardation and down syndrome.

A normal child may have difficulty in learning as a result of underage, lack of maturation, depression, early childhood sickness, lack of the knowledge of the basic, poor teaching method, etc.Such a learner may suffer from slow learning.We conventionally call them slow learners.

CHARACTERISTICS OF SLOW LEARNERS

1. Difficulty to develop communication skills

2. More time is required for cognitive process of
tasks

3. Difficulty in understanding new concept or construct

4. Difficulty to comprehend concept that are abstract in mature

5. Easily withdrawn from learning process.

HOW TO MANAGE SLOW LEARNERS IN THE CLASS

1. Break each lesson down to its simplest and most vital components

2. Encourage hands-on teaching and learning process.

3. Give visual support through the use of charts,
specimen and audio-visuals. This enables the
learner to create mental pictures of the learning
experiences. It aids memory and retention of
the acquired knowledge.

4. Teach with rhymes and poems it boost the
cognitive ability of the slow learner.

5. Always give feedback on the learning progress
as a positive reinforcement.

6.Avoid corporal punishment .Use more of positive reinforcement such as: commendation, gift, thumb-raising , clapping etc and negative reinforcement such as denial of privileges(not rights)
