Scientific and technological advances, along with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and more extreme weather, have accelerated changes in the content and delivery of meteorological and hydrological training services. This trend will continue.

“Education and Training in a Period of Rapid Change” was therefore the theme of a virtual international WMO symposium this week.

The Symposium on Education and Training (SYMET) takes place once every four years to assist the international community in meeting current and future training challenges.

The 14th session – and the first virtual one – factored in lessons learned from the new training and teaching approaches during the COVID-19 pandemic.

More than 200 participants at SYMET discussed how best to address technological advance, service delivery expectations, globalization of the meteorological enterprise, growth in urban environments, and impacts of climate change.

The symposium stressed the need for further development of the evolution of the WMO Global Campus, a collaborative network of WMO Member institutions and National Meteorological Hydrological Services.

Its take-home message was that and has never been more important!
