KHAIRUN Hosts Colloquium in Honour of BUK Vice-Chancellor, Professor Haruna Musa FSI
Khalifa Isyaku Rabiu University (KHAIRUN), Kano, hosted a Colloquium Conference and Book Presentation in honour of the Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano (BUK), Professor Haruna Musa FSI, to commemorate his first anniversary as the 12th Vice-Chancellor of the University.
Themed “Transformative Science and Technology Education for Sustainable National Development,”** the colloquium brought together academics, university administrators, policymakers, scholars and other stakeholders to deliberate on the role of science and technology education in sustainable national development.
In his keynote address, the Vice-Chancellor of KHAIRUN, Professor Abdulrashid Garba, described the event as the first colloquium of its kind in the history of the University. He explained that it was organised to honour Professor Haruna Musa and recognise Bayero University’s significant role in the establishment and development of KHAIRUN.
Professor Garba described the occasion as a celebration of a mentor by the mentee and presented a special Award of Honour to Professor Haruna Musa in recognition of his exemplary leadership, contribution to higher education, and support and mentorship to KHAIRUN. The award was also presented on behalf of the Governing Council by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Professor Kabiru Isyaku, and the Director of the Proprietors’ Office, Alhaji Anwar Isyaku Rabiu.
The Executive Governor of Kano State, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by the Head of Service, Hajiya Bilkisu Shehu Maimota, formally declared the colloquium open. She conveyed the Governor’s goodwill and reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to strengthening education, science, technology and human capital development.
The academic session featured papers by distinguished scholars. Professor Chief Achimugu presented “The Missing Link: Science and Technology Education, Industry and Economic Transformation,” focusing on the connection between education, technology, industry and economic growth.
The Permanent Secretary, Kano State Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Abba A. A. Danguguwa, presented “Strengthening Science and Technology Policies for National Development,” highlighting the importance of effective policies and institutional frameworks in advancing science, technology and innovation.
Former Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and KHAIRUN Governing Council member, Professor Abdallah Uba Adamu, presented “From Static Science to Dynamic Folk Science: Hausa Scientific Proverbs in Transformative Science Education,” exploring the relevance of indigenous knowledge and Hausa scientific proverbs in contemporary science education.
In his remarks, Professor Haruna Musa FSI expressed appreciation to KHAIRUN Management, particularly Professor Abdulrashid Garba, for honouring him. He commended the initiative and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting KHAIRUN’s continued growth and institutional development.
The occasion also featured the presentation of a book authored by the University Bursar, Dr. Najaatu Bala Rabiu, titled "Firm Attributes: Tobin’s Q Analysis of Listed Industrial Goods Companies in Nigeria. The book was reviewed by her mentor, Professor Aliyu S. Kantudu, who highlighted its academic and practical relevance to financial and corporate research.
In his closing remarks, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee and University Librarian, Malam Nazir Muhammad, appreciated the Governor’s representative, the celebrant, guests, paper presenters, organising committee, University Management, staff, students and participants for contributing to the success of the event.
