The Northern Quagmire :Ba Hausa(No Hausa)🫥
When a southern or Eastern man say to you: 'Ba Hausa' meaning he or she doesn't speak Hausa, figuratively. I always find it amusing.
What I am about to talk about is not amusing to say the most.
When we talk about Hausa, in most situations, people assume Muslims. While the vast majority are indeed Muslims.
A Yoruba colleague of mine once told me how his elder brother named his son Umar Farouk and the Yoruba 'demons' present enquired why he has given his son a Hausa name.
This misconception has eating deep down thus anyone with a Muslim name if not Razaki, wasiu etc is a Hausa.
Without doubt most Hausa's are culturally inclined; from their food down to their attires and also In there quest for the Islamic Knowledge.
In my observation, the reputation of the Hausa man as an intelligent, a hardworking, trustworthy and dedicated person is at lowest ebb and hitting rock bottom.
In my objective observation and in my 'own' opinion supported by verifiable evidence I think some bad eggs(Hausas) are trying to damage the Good reputation of the native Hausa speaker.
Let me give you a reason for my assertion. It is now a popular perception that; an average Hausa man has very poor attitude to work.
Here is an analogy to support my claim:
I received a call from a friend who is now a principal in a school: " please I need a chemistry, physics or mathematics teacher. If you know of anyone please send him or her to me."
That was not all...
" but not Hausa! " he added.
I was taken aback but I decided to enquire as to the 'Why'? He was precise and concise in his reply: " They have negative work attitude ".
I was dumbstruck by his statement. I neither proposed nor did I opposed his declaration. However, I critically decided to make an indept evaluation of his postulation.
I used 3 Qualities of a person with positive work attitude to judge them and I also want you to also do the mathematics and give us the Statistics:
1. punctuality
2. Regularity
3. Respect for constituted authority
Take your time to get your facts right. For punctuality, observe if a Hausa man keeps to time; for regularity; how often does he or she seek permissions to be absent for one event or the other . And for discipline; does he or she respect rules and regulations inherent in the organization?
Do the maths.
Well, after my critical evaluation, I had a cold feet. Indeed, the attitude doesn't call for optimism.
Again, I observed keenly, even the Hausas' don't like working with Hausawa even when to the Yoruba man it means 'Hausa come' abi wetin be 'Hausa wa' ?.
In most organisation owned and managed by a Hausa man, it is mostly headed by a 'tribal' man. Hmm, when we say tribal, it is kind of funny, as if Hausa is not a tribe. I know you understand what I mean.
Some years back, I went job hurting after doing excellently in both the aptitude and attitude test. I was invited to meet the manager who doubled as the proprietor for discussion on wage and other benefits.
The manager is a Hausa man with sound command of the English Language. He said to me: ' I like your energy and vision. You seem to carry substance. I know we will benefit from you.'
I felt his flattery was meant to massage my ego, in order to prevent me from fighting back during negotiations.
I thanked him for the kind words any ways, while he went through my CV.
Abdul Mohammed. Are you Hausa?? I smiled. Here is a Hausa man, asking if I am Hausa, what better way to hit the jackpot than to affirm his suspicion? 'Yes sir!' I said with confidence.
His face glowed with disappointment, however, I was so sucked up in my assumption to envision the reality.
He told me, I have lost the job politely: "we will get back to you." I never heard from them since then.
I later learnt from a friend who connected me with the organization, that, I messed up for saying ' I am Hausa.' He doesn't employ Hausa people. Hausa stigmatizing Hausa? This Dog eat dog relationship isn't funny even for the bunny on a sunny.
This is a serious matter which we are neglecting. Do you know a Hausa man with positive work attitude, brings to question the authenticity of his ethnicity just by being dogmatic??
Here is another assignment, when you have the time. Take note: if you are working for a Hausa man or know someone working for one, to give you a statistic: If the head is not the proprietor's relative;what tribe is heading the company?
I couldn't help but to imagine: could it be, the North are able to accommodate the Southerners and Easterners because they have better work attitude than the children of the soil? And we find it hard to fit in, outside our comfort Arena because of our negative work attitude.
I know of a school own by a Hausa man, if you want to be disqualified, write on your CV: 'English and Hausa fluent'. And to be hired just say "ba Hausa" vernacular speaking is highly prohibited indeed.
In politics, the Northerners will give you a run for your money. But when they get into power, most of them run with the money.
Are we ignorant of the sin of our actions or oblivion of the repercussions?
This post is a wakeup call, to me and other 'Northerners' to inculcate positive work attitude so that the labour of our Heroes past, in building a solid reputation doesn't go in vain. Imbibing poor work attitude will have a negative ripple effects on anyone with the name 'Abdul, Sani, Ado, Ahmad or Mohammed' or even our generation to come.
Until we are able to change our attitude to work, opportunities will not only elude us but it will become a stigma for the coming generation..
This attitude is relative and does not suggest all Hausa's have poor attitude to work. But as the Hausa adage says: If the beard of your neighbour is on fire, if you're wise, you will quickly rub yours water.
Plea: Dear society, don't judge a book by it cover. Don't auction the tension caused by a faction because of the action of a section. Hire Abdul, if he doesn't fit, Fire!
The truth is Godly, he who will, should accept it and he, who will, should reject it.🦅✍🏾
