2018 Muazzam Institute of Philosophy and Political Theory for Young People
Centre for information technology and development (CITAD)
3rd Floor, NSITF Building, No.1A, Social Insurance Road, Behind Trade Fair Complex, Kano.
Over the years the teaching of philosophical thought, especially in the social sciences and political theory has declined. This has affected the quality of critical thinking of university students. Yet, without critical thinking, we get graduates of university who are no different from students of craft school who narrowly acquired craft skills without understanding the underlying logics of either the skills or the trade they will practice.
Ibrahim Muazzam of the Department of Political Science, Bayero University, Kano has extensive experience teaching political theory, political philosophy, third world theories and other related topics that have continued to influence the critical thinking of many people who have passed through Bayero University, Kano. Many of these courses have either been phased out or that the explosion in student population has made it impossible to maintain the ambiance of the past that allowed for debates and more rigorous treatment of many important topics that impact on the critical thinking faculty of students.
The resourcefulness, versatility, depth of knowledge, roundedness and intellectual robustness of Ibrahim Muazzam is reflected in the glowing nostalgia with which many of his former students and associates reflect on what they took from him. It is this that CITAD would like to share with younger generations of students and graduates.
In 2017 CITAD started an annual institute for philosophical thoughts for young people. The institute is grounded around these aspects of intellectual grooming by getting Ibrahim Muazzam principally, but also many other critical thinkers to facilitate the sessions of institute.
The second edition of the institute will take place in Kano in first or second week of November 2018, at a date and venue to be decided later. It will be for a period of three days and non-residential.
The institute has three key engagements. A reading of the classical political thought, theory and philosophy through lectures; engagement with current topics of interests; and debates to shape the intellectual engagement of the participants.
The maiden edition was hugely successful. If you wish to participate in the second edition of the institute please send to us the following information, latest November 14, 2018. This is a new deadline to accommodate the social media.
• Name (in full) and affiliation/physical contact address
• Highest qualification, please indicate discipline/subject studied.
• Qualification in view and expected date of completion, if still in active study
• Electronic contact: Valid e-mail address and valid phone number(s)
Preference will be given to applicants with background in social science and humanities.
We are unable to provide scholarships, therefore, you should be responsible for your transportation (including local transportation) and accommodation (for those who reside outside Kano).
Send your application to [email protected], call 090-9999-3738 for further clarification.
