NAF GRADUATES 50 MEDICAL PERSONNEL CHARGES THEM TO UPHOLD EXCELLENCE IN HEALTHCARE DELIVERY
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Friday graduated 50 medical personnel from Basic Medical Course 4/2026 at the Nigerian Air Force School of Medical Sciences and Aviation Medicine (NAFSMSAM), Kaduna. The graduating personnel comprised of 34 airmen and 16 airwomen.
The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, who was represented by the Commandant, Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Air Vice Marshal Adeniran Kolade Ademuwagun, as Guest of Honour, urged the graduands to combine professional competence with love, compassion, and commitment in the discharge of their duties.
In his address, the CAS reaffirmed that human capacity development remains a key driver of his command philosophy, noting that building a well-trained, professional, and medically proficient workforce is critical to enhancing NAF’s operational effectiveness and sustaining quality healthcare delivery. “Healthcare goes beyond professional training. As caregivers, you are often the first and, in some circumstances, the last point of contact for patients, making your roles critical to the healthcare system. Beyond providing the right medical response, you must also care for the person you are attending to,” Air Marshal Aneke stated.
He recalled the Ebola Virus Disease outbreak in Nigeria, noting that while doctors received recognition, several nurses and other caregivers also paid the ultimate price while caring for patients. He added that the growing convergence of roles among doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals makes continuous training and competence essential, as first responders can sometimes make the difference between life and death.
The CAS further noted that caregiving remains one profession that cannot easily be replaced by technology or artificial intelligence because human beings will always need other people to nurture and care for them.
He urged the graduates to continue improving themselves professionally, physically, and mentally, and to build their careers in Nigeria despite existing challenges. “Uphold the utmost standards in healthcare delivery. Treat your patients with empathy and compassion, and maintain your physical fitness as an integral part of your profession. Compassion, commitment and love for the profession are as important as academic and professional knowledge,” he charged. He added that the newly trained personnel would be deployed to NAF hospitals nationwide to strengthen healthcare services for personnel, their dependants, and host communities. The CAS also commended the leadership and instructors of NAFSMSAM for the successful ex*****on of the programme.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Commandant of NAFSMSAM, Air Vice Marshal Anthony Ekpe, said the graduation marked the 4th edition of the Basic Medical Course and an important transition in the careers of the graduates.
He stated that the graduands were exposed to basic medical knowledge, skills and principles, as well as specialized Basic Life Support training to enable them respond appropriately to emergencies while awaiting further medical care. “Medicine devoid of compassion can become cold, while compassion without competence can become very dangerous. You need both. Treat every patient with dignity regardless of rank or status, and uphold integrity, humility, competence and continuous learning,” AVM Ekpe urged.
He commended the instructors and staff for their commitment to producing disciplined and skilled medical personnel capable of contributing effectively to the NAF healthcare system.
Highlights of the ceremony included a live practical demonstration by the graduands on airway management, CPR techniques, combat patient assessment, and emergency response procedures, followed by the presentation of awards to outstanding students. The event was attended by senior officers, instructors, dependants and well-wishers.
