A debate entails discussions usually in the form of arguments from two opposing sides of a motion/topic, the clash of the two opposite sided arguments raised from both proposition and opposition is what makes the debate.
Debate has a long list of uses in policy making, decision making, settling disagreements, enacting and rectifying laws etc.
While the emergence of debating societies date back to early eighteenth century, debating itself goes a lot far beyond that.
Modern competitive debating has many different formats and styles used in different tournaments globally, and these include but are not limited to: World Schools Style Debating (WSS), British Parliamentary style (BP), Australasian format, Lincoln-Douglas format, mock trials, legislative debating, Mini United Nations (MUN) etc.
In the Kaduna State Debating Society (KSDS) however, we only practice two formats of debating and they are:
1. World schools Style debating (WSS) which is used in the World Schools Debating Championships and other high school level tournaments around the world.
2. The British Parliamentary format (BP): this is also a globally utilized format of debate used in the World Universities Debating Championships (WUDC) and other university level debate tournaments world wide.
However, in the KSDS we use the WSS style more than we do the BP format because only a few global highschool debate tournament organizers have BP track for their annual tournaments.
Would you want to learn about the WSS debating format?
Stay tuned as we are soon starting a chain thread of posts telling you all about the WSS debating format and at the end of which we’ll share to all who are interested in having a copy of our debating handbook focusing on teaching how to win WSS style debates.

Great debate session today at Ekonomska fakulteta Univerza v Ljubljani / University of Ljubljana (Faculty of Economics Ljubljana) as a part of the "EU economics and Slovenia" course. I am really happy that debate is used as a teaching methodology more and more often at all levels of education.
Topic for today was resolution analysis, argumentation, refutation & comparative analysis connected with the issues of common EU markets and EU cohesion funds. Tnx to Ivan Koruza for the help with materials and big tnx to prof. Šlander Wostner for invitation and cooperation!
