It is profusely worrisome how students of these days do well in SSCE (WAEC/NECO) but fail woefully when it comes to UTME (JAMB) & POST – UTME. You will agree with me that if all is right, a student who can make 7 credits in SSCE should not find it difficult to make at least 250 of 400 in UTME (JAMB) without stress. However, it is annoying how many students do pass SSCE with A’s and B’s with score even less than 200 of 400 in UTME (JAMB). As an educator and an experienced stakeholder in the Nigerian education system, the answer to the alarming and worrisome question on students’ woeful performance is not far-fetched.
The horrible process which schools encourage in helping students pass SSCE is the major factor. Apparently, no student who passed SSCE in such fraudulent means would believe in studying hard to pass any exam. Parents who are expected to kick against the half-baked process are not helping matters too; rather the poor students’ slogan becomes adopted by even the so-called educated parents who should keep them shut of their ‘JAMB – NAH – SCAM’ statement.
Anyway, our experiments on a good number of students have shown that a combined SSCE & UTME curriculum can be successfully covered within just a period of 15 months (a year and 3 months). This opinion is not to dispute the Nigerian 9 – 3 – 4 system if well managed, but it is a pronouncement of a new discovery which has been working for us over 5 years now. We are happy to say this same method has produced a number of First- Class University graduates from reputable universities.
