Intellectual disability is not a measure of a person’s worth, potential, or ability to contribute to society.

It refers to differences in intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior such as learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and everyday life skills that begin during the developmental period.

But here’s what truly matters:

With the right support, inclusive education, accessible environments, and community acceptance, individuals with intellectual disabilities can learn, work, build relationships, and live meaningful lives.

The real barrier is not intellectual disability.
The real barrier is exclusion.

When we promote inclusive education, early intervention, family support, and respectful language, we create a society where everyone can thrive.

Inclusion is not charity.
It is justice.

Disability is a natural part of human diversity, not a limitation to potential.

In Nigeria, millions of people live with physical, intellectual, and developmental disabilities, yet many still face barriers to education, healthcare, employment, and social inclusion. Understanding disability is the first step toward creating inclusive schools, communities, and policies.

At the International School of Disability Studies (ISDS), we promote awareness, research, training, and access to knowledge to support persons with disabilities, as well as the students, professionals, caregivers, and policymakers who work with them.

Inclusive societies begin with awareness, respect, and informed action.

Inclusive policies and effective support for persons with disabilities must be grounded in strong research and reliable data.

At the International School of Disability Studies (ISDS), we promote research-informed understanding of intellectual and developmental disabilities in Nigeria and across Africa. Our work bridges the gap between research, practice, and policy, ensuring that decisions affecting persons with disabilities are evidence-based and contextually relevant.

Through research, training, and access to knowledge, we support students, professionals, caregivers, researchers, and policymakers committed to building inclusive societies.
