JAMKAB Royal Delegation, FCMLT Jos Push Tinubu for Assent to Federal Medical University Bill
Jos, Plateau State July 21, 2026

Traditional rulers from 11 states and the management of the Federal College of Medical Laboratory Science and Technology, Jos have jointly called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to grant expedited assent to the Federal University of Medical Laboratory Science and Technology, Jos (Establishment) Bill, 2025.

The appeal was made during a royal courtesy visit by the Council of Traditional Rulers and Title Holders of JAMKAB Member-States, led by Chief Butswat Gidado Manasseh, President/Founder of JAMKAB Peace and Empowerment Initiative, to the College on Tuesday.

"A Covenant of Hope for Nigeria"
Addressing the Provost, Prof. Sunday Nkereuwem Etukudoh, the royal delegation described the proposed university as “a covenant of life, hope and greatness” to secure the future of Nigerian youths and place Plateau on the global map of medical science.

“We humbly and urgently appeal to Mr. President to grant assent without delay so that the dreams of our people may be realized,” Chief Manasseh said. He added that JAMKAB, which spans Bauchi, Plateau, Nasarawa, Taraba, Adamawa, FCT-Abuja, Yobe, Katsina, Rivers, Gombe, and Kaduna, has promoted peace through education support, free medical outreaches, youth empowerment, and community projects.

Responding, Prof. Etukudoh aligned with the call and assured that the College was ready to build “a University that will make Plateau proud, make Nigeria proud, and make the Traditional Institution proud.”

Professor Etukudoh and the royal fathers appreciated and commended Hon. Daniel Asama Ango, Member Representing Jos North/Bassa Federal Constituency, for sponsoring the bill. The Provost called him “the Architect of this Dream” who “sponsored hope.”

They also appreciated the National Assembly under Senate President Godswill Akpabio for the concurrent passage of the bill, and the Federal Ministry of Health for its policy direction and technical support.

Petitions and Partnership
The JAMKAB delegation presented two petitions: support for a bus to aid mobility across 11 states, and priority consideration for qualified JAMKAB youths in admission and employment at the new university.

Prof. Etukudoh said the mobility request would be taken to the College’s partners, while opportunities at the university would be guided by merit, equity and federal character. “The qualified sons and daughters of JAMKAB and our host communities will find favor here. For in empowering our youths, we empower peace itself,” he said.

He further proposed a formal partnership with JAMKAB for community health outreaches, peace through health programs, and mentorship of students across member-states.

The event ended with prayers for Nigeria, Plateau State, and the College.

The visit was attended by traditional rulers, management, staff and students of FCMLT Jos.

“We Are Already a University”: FCMLST Jos Provost Calls for Hostels, Senate Backing as Bill Advances

The Federal College of Medical Laboratory Science and Technology (FCMLST) Jos, has declared itself a University “in reality” and is urging the Senate and Federal Government to prioritize a Bill seeking its upgrade to Nigeria’s first specialized university for Medical Laboratory Science.

The declaration was made on Wednesday 10th June 2026 by Provost/CEO Prof. Sunday Nkereuwem Etukudoh during a combined Matriculation, Orientation, Graduation, and Send-off ceremony at the College’s Permanent Site, Lamingo.

Addressing graduands, matriculants, staff, parents and dignitaries, Prof. Etukudoh said Nigeria’s health and economic woes in 2026—from inflation to “japa” trace back to weak diagnostic capacity. “COVID-19 stripped us bare and whispered a truth we must never forget: A nation that cannot diagnose cannot defend itself,” he stated.

Tracing FCMLST’s journey from a 1954 unit in Hospital Services to a College in 2006, he said the Bill before the National Assembly is “not bureaucracy. It is prophecy.” While the Bill has passed the House of Representatives, he “decreed” to the Senate: Concur. I decree to the Federal Government: Prioritize. Nigeria’s health security hangs on it. Nigeria’s youth destiny hangs on it Nigeria's Scientific independence hangs on it..”

The Provost showcased infrastructure at the Permanent Site, an ultra-modern auditorium, 2-storey admin and classroom blocks, e-library, diagnostic and research labs. But he decried that for 70 years students still live “in exile” at DogonKarfe hostels far from campus. “We have built the classrooms of a University. We have raised the laboratories of a University. What remains is to build the home of a University. A university without hostels is a body without a heart,” he said.

On academic direction, he charged students to embrace Artificial Intelligence. Guest lecturer Dr. Obinna Nwankiti spoke on “Integrating AI into Public Health and Medical Laboratory Responses.” Prof. Etukudoh warned: “The microscope of tomorrow will be powered by data. AI will not replace the laboratory scientist. But the scientist who refuses AI will be replaced.”

He also honoured retiring officers, Deputy Provost Mr. Frederick Olowu and Chief Medical Lab Scientist Mr. Thomas Gonina, saying “retirement is not sunset. It is a coronation.”

He concluded by declaring the ceremony open and praying: “God bless the Federal College of Medical Laboratory Science & Technology, Jos. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

FCMLST Jos currently awards National Diplomas under NBTE and has been legally empowered by the FCMLST Act 2022 to award degrees and PhDs once university status is granted.

THE BURIAL OF LATE MRS SUSAN ISHAKU ABUBAKAR
Late Mrs. Susan Ishaku Abubakar, a staff member of the Department of Information/Public Relations, Federal College of Medical Laboratory Science and Technology (FCMLST), Jos, was laid to rest following a funeral service held at ECWA Unity Church, Rayfield. The body departed the Air Force Hospital Mortuary at about 8:00 a.m. for the church where family members, friends, colleagues, and well-wishers gathered to pay their last respects.
During the funeral service, several tributes and testimonies were given by family members, friends, church members, colleagues, her mother, and husband. The testimonies highlighted her selfless service, dedication to duty, kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment both at work and in the church.
The husband of the deceased, Mr. Ishaku Nuhu, appreciated the management and staff of FCMLST Jos, especially members of the Information/Public Relations Department, for their love, support, and commitment towards his late wife during her illness. He noted that some members of the department stayed with her in the hospital during her difficult moments. He described his wife as a pillar of support, a good wife, and a straightforward person, adding that life would never remain the same without her. He also appealed for prayers as he journeys through this difficult phase.
The Provost/CEO of the College, Professor Sunday Etukudoh, represented by the Head of Department, Mrs. Rose Sati, stated that the college community would greatly miss Mrs. Susan Abubakar’s love, dedication to duty, kindness, generosity, and jovial nature. The mother of the deceased appreciated the management and staff of FCMLST Jos for the unwavering support shown to her daughter during her illness and after her demise. She also thanked the physicians who cared for her daughter, including Dr. Peter, Dr. Elizabeth and Dr. Osaweh. Beginning her remarks with the song, “The Jesus That I Have Is Enough for Me,” she emotionally stated that she had said everything the previous day and was only present to bid farewell to her beloved daughter.
The biography of the late Mrs. Susan Abubakar was read by her sister, Saraya Abubakar, while the representative of the in-laws, Mr. Apolos, described Susan as a woman who lived a life worthy of emulation.
The sermon was delivered by Air Cdre (Rtd) Rev. Dr. Gani Dogo Bari, who preached on the topic, “The Fear of Death,” taking his text from Psalm 116:3. He described death as a fearful reality and the greatest enemy of mankind, emphasizing that no one knows the appointed time of death; therefore, everyone should always be prepared. He encouraged Christians to stand firm in the Lord and serve Him wholeheartedly.
Late Mrs. Susan Ishaku Abubakar was remembered as a committed worker, devoted Christian, loving wife, and caring mother.
