IS YOUR CHILD STRUGGLING TO READ?

You're not alone and you're NOT failing as a parent or teacher.

Most struggling readers aren’t lazy or slow.
They just haven’t been taught the right way.

Imagine your child picking up a book with confidence, reading out loud, smiling, and actually enjoying it all in just 30 days.

I'm Monica Achong, founder of Starlight Foundational Reading Academy, and I’ve helped dozens of parents and teachers turn frustrated, struggling readers into proud, fluent ones often within the first 10 days.

Here’s what you should know: the problem isn’t your child.

It’s outdated teaching methods that ignore how the brain actually learns to read.

That’s why I created the RCR Method, a proven system that helps your child:

✅ Start reading before Day 10

✅ Build fluency and confidence in just 30 days

✅ Fall in love with reading without tears or tantrums

✅ Finally catch up (and even get ahead!)

You don’t need hours of tutoring.
Just 20 minutes a day with our guided plan and watch the magic unfold.

Join Raising Confident Readers today for just ₦5,000

You’ll get access to the full 30-day plan, printable resources, coaching, and our private WhatsApp group.

THE DAY I LOST MY COOL WHILE TEACHING

Now, I know I’ve been preaching about controlling emotions in the classroom.

Emotional intelligence, calm communication, patience with your learners, I know, I know. I’ve said it all.

But let me confess something. I, too, have had my own “moment.”

Let me tell you a story.

It happened in 2018. A sunny, peaceful morning. I left my house without eating. Why?

I can't remember. Maybe I overslept. Maybe I was broke. Maybe I just believed in the lie that “I’ll eat during break.”

One thing I know for sure though, my stomach was already setting up a protest while I was in class.

Now, this particular day, the corper who was supposed to take the other half of the class had gone for her clearance. And guess what?

I had to combine the two classes. Over 50 children.

Fif...ffty little voices, with fifty different energies. And just one me.

I felt like crying.

Before I could mark homework, classwork, try to manage noise levels that kept rising like fuel prices, and all my body was silently waving a white flag.

But I pressed on. Teachers are built for battle, right?

At this point, you should shout E for energy for me.

Then it was time for reading. Usually, I’d call them out one by one, they’d point at the board and read aloud while I stood beside them, guiding.

That day, I was standing but my knees were arguing with me. I could feel the groaning in my belly like a faulty generator.

I kept sipping water like it was glucose, whispering to my stomach, “Please just hold on till break time. Just thirty more minutes. You can do this.”

Then came the moment. One boy, I’ll never forget stood in front of the class with his Innocent face.

I pointed at the word on the board. He looked at it while I looked at him with hopes in my eyes.

He opened his mouth slightly, one finger on his cheek, giving that “I'm thinking” pose.

"C...."

I nodded to encourage him. You know that teacher nod? That “Yes, yes, you can do it!” nod?

I nodded like an overworked lizard. My neck was dancing zanku.

Still nothing.

In my mind I was praying that this boy should get it because my emotions were building.

So, I kept nodding. He kept staring.

Then finally, boom! He opened his mouth and said something so off, so unrelated to the word on the board, I nearly lost balance.

It was like asking a child to read “cat” and he confidently says “elephant.”

Like how? What concerns "C" and "E".

I froze.

I told myself that I have entered.

I wanted to scream. I wanted to shout at him. I wanted to ask him, “Where did that even come from???”

What is this? Imagine your energy, time, efforts, hope yet nothing. I have put my best shot that I know with the last strain of energy.

I wanted to cry and flog him.

But instead, I smiled. That kind of forced smile that even your ancestors know is fake.
I told him calmly, “Try again.” self-control.

He did.

Same result.

By this time, my hunger had taken the wheel.
My emotions started knocking. Anger was knocking. Frustration was knocking.

Even tears were hiding somewhere behind the door. I could feel it, if I said one more word, I would explode.

So you know what I did?

I quietly went to sit down. Took another sip of water. Closed my eyes. And had a quick, silent meeting with myself.

“Monica, if you react now, you might say or do something you’ll regret. This is not about the child. This is your body begging for food.”
And in that quiet moment, I also realized one mistake I was doing, I was correcting him too quickly.

Each time he made a sound mistake, I jumped in to fix it. I didn’t give him space to think. To struggle. To try. Maybe because of hunger, I wanted him to be fast.

So I changed my approach.

I called him back. This time, we tried a different way. I slowed down. Gave him time. Used a fun, low-pressure tone.

And just like that, he got it.

His whole face lit up like Christmas morning. That proud smile, that sparkled in his eyes, it made my empty stomach forget its hunger for a second.

Lesson of the day:
That day taught me two things:

1. Never teach on an empty stomach. Hunger is not your friend.

2. Sometimes, the best teaching happens when you slow down and let the child own the process.

3.And most importantly, don’t correct too quickly.

Sometimes, the best thing you can do is pause, breathe, and let the child find their way, with your guidance, not your frustration.

That’s the day I lost my cool but found a better way.

3 Excuses You Tell Yourself Just to Feel Better (But They’re Holding You Back)

There are certain things you say and don't see them as an excuse meanwhile, they are holding you back.

1. “I’ll do it when I have more time.”

Even if you are given more time, you will still procrastinate and miss it.

Make time for what matters. Delay is still a decision.

2.“Maybe I’m just not ready yet.”

We full here.

Let me wait for the sign. The sign comes and you still ask for another to be sure that you are ready.

I am not ready yet. You want to have everything available before you start.

Growth rarely waits for readiness. Start before you feel ready.

3. “Others are doing it better, so why bother?”
Your journey is valid even if someone else started earlier.

So do yours! We want to see your own.

It might be the answer we are waiting for.

Excuses feel comforting.

But results come from action, not comfort.

Start now! Start from anywhere. Don't wait to be ready.

Start messy.

What excuse have you been using lately?

THERE’S A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN “HOW TO” AND “HOW I”

Are you tired of all the “how to” advice that leads nowhere?

Here’s what they’re not telling you.

There’s a BIG difference between “how to” and “how I.”

And it matters especially when you're trying to help a struggling reader.

“How to teach reading.”

“How to build fluency.”

“How to help struggling readers.”

It’s everywhere.

But most of it? It's a theory.

Inside Raising Confident Readers, I don’t teach theory.

I teach what I’ve done.

I don’t teach what I think works. I teach what I’ve done.

How I turned reading from a battle into a breakthrough.

How I helped “slow” learners smile again.

How I simplified reading so parents and teachers could actually see progress.

No fluff. Just a proven, repeatable system.
One that’s helped hundreds.

If you’re tired of guessing and ready to finally get results then this is your next step.

Join this batch and pay 5k.

The next batch pay 15k.

Enrollment ends 30th of June.

Class start on the 1st July.

With 5k you can make the difference for your child.

I'll leave more in the comments and check the first comment for how to join.

DO YOU REJECT A DELICIOUS MEAL?

Nobody Rejects a Confident Child Who Can Read Fluently

It’s impossible to ignore a child who reads with ease, speaks with confidence, and engages boldly in class.

The same way we’re drawn to delicious meals…We’re drawn to smart, expressive children who can read clearly.

That’s what Raising Confident Readers is all about.

When your child can read:

They capture attention in school and at home

They shine among their peers

They build confidence naturally

They participate more in class

They learn faster and retain better

They begin to believe in themselves

I’ve seen “struggling” children go from hiding their books… to reading aloud with a proud smile in just a few weeks.

It’s not magic, it’s a proven system.

When your child can’t read well, it’s like serving an undercooked meal, it frustrates them, embarrasses them, and makes them pull away from learning.

But once you give them the delicious meal of proper reading support, everything changes.

You don’t have to figure this out on your own.

The Raising Confident Readers 30-day program walks you step-by-step on how to help your child move from struggling to successful.

And right now, the July batch is open for early enrollment.

There was a time I almost gave up.

Not because I didn’t love teaching…

But because I felt like nothing was working.
I had this group of pupils who just couldn’t blend sounds.

I taught and retaught.

I used flashcards, songs, even rewards.
But they still struggled to read simple words.
Every day, I went home frustrated.

I started questioning myself:

“Am I even good at this?”
“Maybe I’m not cut out to teach reading.”
But deep down, I knew the problem wasn’t me.

It was the method.
So I went back to the drawing board.
I researched. I learned.

I stopped doing “more of the same” and tried a better way.

I discovered how to teach reading systematically.

How to use sound swapping, segmentation, blending, and confidence-building strategies that actually worked.

And slowly… They started reading.
One by one, their faces lit up when they could read full words and even full sentences on their own.

That experience became part of what inspired me to create Raising Confident Readers.
Because I know what it’s like to struggle.
To feel lost.

To care deeply and still feel like you’re not getting results.

Now I teach others how to teach reading with results.

So that no parent, no teacher, no child ever feels stuck again.

We start July 1st.
