Tinubu Dissolves Obasanjo's Privatisation Committee After 25 Years

By Temidayo Badmus

President Bola Tinubu has dissolved the Presidential Implementation Committee (PIC) on the Sale, Privatisation and Leasing of Federal Government Properties, bringing to an end a committee established during former President Olusegun Obasanjo's administration that has overseen the disposal of federal assets for 25 years.

According to the Presidency, the committee was chaired by the Minister of Housing and included representatives from the Ministries of Transportation, Justice, Health and Agriculture, the Nigeria Police Force, and both public and private sector stakeholders. Professor P. T. Ahire served as its pioneer secretary.

Onanuga recalled that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved the establishment of a Panel of Inquiry on March 22, 2001, to produce a White Paper that would guide the implementation of the committee's recommendations. The panel completed its assignment after 21 months and submitted its report.

Explaining the rationale behind the committee's dissolution, the Presidency said its operations had gradually extended beyond the mandate for which it was established, leading to numerous litigations across the country.

"After careful consideration, the Government has noted that the activities of the PIC had extended beyond
