World Anaesthesia Day is marked every year on 16 October.

It commemorates the first successful public demonstration of Ether Anaesthesia by William T. G. Morton in 1846 at Massachusetts General Hospital - a breakthrough that made pain‑free surgery possible.

The 2025 theme is “Anaesthesiology in Health Emergencies,” spotlighting the vital role anaesthesiologists play during disasters, pandemics, and other critical situations.

Despite the historic progress, an estimated 5 billion people still lack access to safe anaesthesia, underscoring the day’s advocacy for global equity in anaesthetic care.
